Subject: How did this happen? IP: Logged
Message: The last time I changed my oil I made the mistake of putting a FRAM Filter on my 4.7 v8. I knew better but thought I would wait another oil change to switch over to something other than fram. When I took the filter off I was shocked to see a quarter inch dent on the side of the filter that faced the engine block. The dent was right below the black rubber band that's used to grip the filter. I don't know how this happened but will never use a fram filter again. Do you think it imploded on itself from a vacuum in the system? There was no paint chipped off of the filter that I could tell from a possible rock but again nothing could get in between the filter and block. Thoughts?

Message: Maybe I'm out of the loop, but when did Fram get this kind of reputation? I can't remember a single problem I've had with any oil filter, of any brand. Once, in 15 years, I had an oil filter on too tight and had poor leverage. I ended up stabbing it with a screwdriver to get it off. That's about the extent of my problems. If it truly was poor manufacturing, then I think we'd hear about it. Maybe contact the manufacturer?

Message: That's actually correct. Your 4.7 creates such a high amount of horsepower and torque that it often will suck the oil filter into the block which will require major maintenance. Mopar filters are built with special titanium casings and magnesium filter material that prevents this from happening. Thankfully, I don't have this problem with the 5.9 liter.

Message: Fram has gotten that reputation after a few evaluation tests compared to a range of a lot of other filters. Fram tested very poorly. They don't have a great ability filter oil well because of the way the element in the filter is designed, and the amount of element in the filter.

Message: It got dented on install or removal. Granted, I haven't looked at the 4.7 oiling system, but aren't they usually pressurized systems, as in "oil" pressure? Aren't the filters force fed by this same oil pressure? Bueller?......Bueller?....

Message: I tried a vacuum in the system. I used an Oreck XL with pretty good results, next I am going to try a Hoover and see if I can get the valve covers to collapse.

Message: To set the record straight, I tightened the filter by hand so their wasn't any damage done to the filter at installation. I did use a strap wrench to take it off but there's no way the strap wrench created the dent. I noticed the dent as I turned the filter enough to see the backside of the filter.

Message: I can't believe what some people come up with...
A vacuum within an engine strong enough to pull a dent in an oil filter??? Sheesh, I am without words.
And I am pretty sure that it wasn't because it was a Fram filter, I would say that it was either like that when you put it on (which anything can happen when things get packaged) or it was damaged during installation or removal, like others have said.
I am still shaking my head at that vacuum statement!!

Message: considering that the oil pump is IN FRONT of the filer, thus putting the filter under pressure not under vacuum, how does this happen? wwere you running fast enough that the pump could not keep up with the oil demands and the swirling crankshaft then demand so much oil as to cause the mysterious vacuum that sucked in the can that is pressure tested to 250 lbs without damage?
