quote from board ZenDakota

These are awfully rusty. Also it doesn't say they are new...

Chris

You wouldn't clean off the rust before cams were installed? Would that be OK? I only ask, because my HO cams came rusty too and was wondering what to clean them off with.
quote 2thextreme

geez yafus, why would you accuse someone of lying when this is obviously a common occurance??

Depends on the experience you have and the tools you have available. Imagine the worst case scenario for installing cams you can think of, then imagine if you can deal with it, fix it, and get that truck running in time to use it for work. Ask yourself if you could handle a job like that in the first place, and compare it to other automotive jobs you've had. Be honest and be confident but don't get in over your head unless you have a friend that has done a lot of cam work. I've opted to have a shop do mine, im just too fat and too impatient to handle it myself. I have the skill, just not the time either.

The slight rust you will find on the CAMS is Normal, DO NOT PANICK. My factory CAMS had tons of rust on them, and the H.O.s had a tad. As long as the rust isn't on the lobes themselves don't sweat it. As you can see in this picture of the Stock CAM you can see some rust (the truck had 800 miles and was 'Custom Built to Order')

You can find several pics of the CAM install on this page CAM Install, a Picture Documentary

Good Luck and Have fun.

The bearing journals are ground smooth and Coated just like the Lobes, and are made of a different material than the CAM tubes. I did kind of figure even a Yafus would have enough sense to emery clothe the bearing journals if they had a spot of rust on them, or not use them if the journals was coated in rust. No offense JasonsDakota.

Yafus, why are you so angry man? Why do you have to flame at people that have a different view than yours? Does your Prozac need to be increased? Your world seems to be filled with hate. Man get over it and move on. Maybe if you had added the point that 'Be sure the bearing Journals aren't rusted' would have been more civilized. Instead you feel it's your duty to attack me. Get Over It.

My sincerest apologies to anyone else that might read this for the extra paragraph.

JasonsDakota, if I was near you on the East Coast I would Gladly give you a hand changing your CAMS. I'm in Colorado so it would be a long drive for you to come here. I have done about 8 sets for Me, and freinds in Germany and here and it isn't that hard if you are Mechanically inclined. Good Luck

I've done my HO install, years ago.

I agree with Lynn, the Old Fool!

It's minimal surface rust, and doesn't matter at all, You could even probably clean it off with a solvent.

Incidentally, I got mine, via a dealer in Rhode Is., and I live in the HOuston area, and didn't have any rust on mine.
