Message: Need advice. When I start my 91 5.2L Dakota, a big puff of foul smelling smoke is the first thing I see. Smells and looks like oil being burned. Usually it clears up after the first 3 seconds, although once it started smoking while driving around town. I just recently got the truck and it has 140,000 miles.
Any ideas? Could the oil be coming from the valve train?

Message: I agree w/ Art. Likely the valve train, the valve seals and guides...
But then again, sure it's not burning rich with fuel for some reason? What kind of smell, odor? Gas or oil?
If it were the rings, you wouldn't see the smoke during start up, or really anywhere else. It would just consume oil at a rate faster than normal, but you couldn't see it visually out of the tailpipe. Hate when either of these things happen, ugh.

Message: After years of running small block mopars past 100k, I can assure you that a new set of umbrella or similar type of valve seal kit will take care of almost all of the start-up smoke.
About $40 in tools + seals, and 2-3hrs,will fix the problem, if you want to do it yourself.
You'll need a twist down spring compressor and air hose to pressurize the cylinders. (A good time to change your spark plugs also)
The rest is just patience. Removing and replacing valve keepers without losing them.

Message: Thanks for the advice. I'm not familiar with the valve seal kits you mentioned. Is there one brand in particular that you recommend? Are they available at regular auto parts stores?

Message: you got 3/8th valves right just use chev 350 posi seals they work best also you need certain tools to do this u need a heads on valve spring compressor, air compressor and line to hook to plug hole,I did it once without air you get the piston to TDC and stuff rope in the plug hole pack it in good keeps the valve up,works but a real pain in the ass,air is much better

Message: cause chev stock valve seals are jus o rings on a grove on the valve the posi`s are a fix for this and they fit, mopars posi seals are teflon and they dont even fit the stock guides without machining,at least dodge comes with umbrella seals chevy

Message: Thanks for the follow up Art. I've been out a few days. The'91 (non-magnum) should be 3/8ths stems. Back when I was mechanicin'and working parts stores for a living, the Chevy guys just thought the smoke was "normal" at 30-50k. My '72 D-100 360 smoked less with 380k. Umbrellas are the only way to go for valve seals.
