Subject: air intake muffler question IP: Logged
Message: I have a 2000 2wd 3.9 and I'm in need of a new air intake system that will give me a little more power and acceleration. Any suggestions? Also I'm looking for a new muffler system that will add a powerful sound, right now my trucks quiet and I want that to change. Again any suggestions would be great as I'm kind of new to all of this

Message: The best thing to do as far as sound goes it to check out the different manufacturers web sites and listen to their sound samples. Either that, or do some leg work and find a location in your area that might have some vehicles around (car show?). Intake will depend upon your goal. Long runners vs short runners will affect your torque and rpm range.

Message: and now for some real help... get a flowmaster, if you like loud
you'll love it, i had one on my 3.9 and it was obnoxious i got
sick of it after a couple years and put a dynomax superturbo on
which is a little louder than stock
if you want to hear what the flowmaster will sound like on your
truck, i have an excellent audio clip on my site
www.mark-world.com/dakota
as far as your air intake, you could try a k&n fipk or just make
your own with a piece of 3" diameter pvc and a k&n filter i have
a pic of the fipk on my site also

Message: this may sound stupid but it works put a inch space in the exhaust system leaving a gap for the exhaust to escape through and do it by the muffler. this will give you a deeper sound and make it louder with a possible power increase.
i did it to my friends Silverado and the thing sounds bad a$$ but he also has some of the exhaust traveling through the magna flow muffler its on a 5.3 v8.

Message: Yeah, and it has the added benefit of leaking exhaust gases into your cab when you're idling.

Yeah, but I'd prefer not to do it in a hospital ICU.

Message: toolfan,
your pasted quote, out of context:
'this may sound stupid '
Is your post for real?
An intended leak in your exhaust system, for street, every day driver purposes?
I may be going out on a limb here, but I'm guessing you don't have any kind of inspection check. Before we had emmissions, you still could NOT have a leak in your exhaust system.

you have no idea just how STUPID that suggestion is. Let me educate you. can you say CARBON MONOXIDE? It's a poison for christ sake.

Message: If you aren't concerned about carbon monoxide, here's something else to consider - exhaust gas is very corrosive; both to the sheet metal under your truck, and to rubber parts. I desroyed the spare tire on another truck when I ignored a leaky tailpipe - exhaust dry rotted it badly.
