99 Dakota 3.9 auto, 57K miles. Been running a little funny. Driving to friends the other day and just starts missing/sputtering - check engine light flashing - all this for about fifteen seconds then smooths out. Runs okay for the trip home. Now still acting weird, and the check engine light constantly on. Went to allpar to see how to retrieve the codes without a scanner (I'm so broke) and tried all. Pushed in trip/odometer reset and left key in on (not run) for five seconds - got the CHEC message on the odomoter - released button and the little lights just went in squares right to left - flashed trip - kept going and ended up with mileage. Left it in the position - watched the gas, battery, speedometer, oil, temp gauges go halfway then all the way, then back to normal. No codes.
Tried the key cycling - 3 times, 10 times, with the trip pushed and without. Light is still on - truck is still not right.
Any ideas or suggestions?
I really need to get the info - supposed to be moving for a job and can't get stranded in the middle of nowhere.
Any help appreciated.

Need to read with a scanner .
NO way to retreive otherwise on that year..
However - First thing to check out is
the gas Cap
1= make SURE it is TIGHT .
If it doesn't look to " good "
Replace it.......
Common cause of Check engine light on those
years..

Autozone will scan it for free for you. The stealership will relieve you of $65-$85 to do it.

Don't think it's the gas cap code there, sounds like you got a misfire possibly on a cylinder. Check your plugs, amke sure they're in good, wires, cap and rotor. I got a little water in my distributor cap last summer, and it corroded the point in the distributor cap and the wire, causing it to misfire. Replaced wire, cap, and rotor, and everything was fine.

Thanks, Ken, Bob and ? - I did take to Autozone - got the P0305 Cylinder #5 misfire - plug wires were good enough to keep for a little while - what a difference a set of plugs made. Road trip tomorrow, so if anything else, I'm sure I'll find out.
Kudos to Autozone - obviously it helps them sell parts - think of the money they (possibly) make with a cheap scanner investment for each store. Even the $13 I spent today - that amount over one year alone is $4700 - more I'm sure since I would have done the cap, rotor, wires had I the money. And when I do in a few weeks, I'll buy stuff from them. Good relations and all.
