Subject: REPLACE THOSE CAPS AND ROTORS!!! IP: Logged
Message: Looking through the archives, I've seen several posts about the short lives of caps and rotors with an MSD - so, with 23K on the originals, I swapped in some Borg-Warners last night. The old contacts were worn into a "V" and everything was coated all white (bad bad bad). Took about 15 minutes to change, $5 for the parts.
HOLY SH*T!!
1.5 extra MPG just appeard outta nowhere (now a whopping 14.6)!! Idles better. Sounds better. Moves better.
You guys rock!!

Message: I notice on my 3.9L that the cap/rotor seem to be in an awful place (way back towards the firewall. Was it difficult to reach for you?

Message: It was a challenge, for sure. Since I’m just not able to tell which terminal each plug wire should go on from the firing order printed on the manifold, I had to transfer from the old cap to the new one at a time. Trying to fit TWO caps in that small space was interesting. I’m pretty short too (5’ 6”) and the truck has the Tuff Country 5.5” lift – so it’s a lonnnnng reach for me. I wound up sitting on the radiator, straddling the engine. We're best friends now...

Message: The Borg/Warner cap is thicker so getting a wrench on the bolts/screws is more difficult. A short screwdriver is better but still difficult. Cap and button are definitly an improvement.
The firing order, 1-8-4-3-6-5-7-2

Message: Yeah - that order is printed on the intake, but for the mechanically challenged 1-8-4-3-6-5-7-2 doesn't mean a thing. Could be my high school locker combination for all I know.

Message: When I changed mine, I used the firing order picture in Haynes and pulled all the wires off, put the new cap/rotor on and then followed the diagram, much easier to manuever around that way.

Message: I changed mine on my 5.9 after about 70000 and there was nothing left and it idled like crap. Changing it was the hardest thing i ever had to do. I could not transfer the wires from one to the other because the plug wires had no slack and would only move about 1 inch from the terminal. I ended up just pulling all of them puting the other cap in and following the wires and using the fireing order to find were they go. But its tough. But it all worked out. Took me about 45min i checked and rechecked to make sure
