I have a 95 dakota 318. I purchased a Mopar Performance computer at about 20k miles. I could feel the performance difference right away, but it always knocked under wide-open-throttle. I was using 91-92 octane gas. I put the stock computer back on because I didn't want to destroy the engine. Any one else have this problem? Any ideas how to fix? Also, the truck has been to the dealership prior for a rough idle complaint. The dealership said they adjusted the timing, but all the manuals that I have read about the truck say the timing is factory set and not adjustable. Could this affect the MP computer as well? Any help would be appreciated.

Try cooler plugs and smaller gap. Cheap solution?

180 t-stat might help as well. Try running the Autolite 3923 plugs, they're a colder running plug, will help against detonation/pinging.

Most dealer's techs are idiots... it took them a year to figure out that my speed sensor was bad, cause it wasnt shiftng into OD. This was after a tranny rebuild, at thier cost. Anyway, you might want to check your intake manifold pan gasket, I never had a problem with knocking, but I did with oil consumpsion (sp?) It was a pain to do, but it fixed the problem, I had to do it anyway, I didnt want any of my boost going into the crank case, yeah know?

180 t-stat, 3923's will help. You may have a plenum gasket leak. They are very common. Another place to look is the coolant temp sensor. If it's not working properly, that can cause a rough idle.

I have a 1992. Always had pinging under WOT at higher rpms. I would say above 3500 or so. Most noticeable on highway blasts. I put the Mopar PCM in mine, and it cleared up after 2 tanks or so. I also replaced the intake with an M1 following a severely blown intake gasket. Had so much oil inside my intake I thought I had my own refinery. Also replaced the plugs with Autolite 3923, gapped to .035. K&N Filtercharger, removed the weather guard blocking the air intake snorkel and relocated the IAT sensor to the intake tube. Truck runs like a top now, no pinging even at max rpm of 5500 or so. Also had the 180 t-stat.

Take your airfilter off, open your throttle body valves and look inside with a flashlight. If you have an oily film inside you have a blown gasket, which will cause pinging regardless of octane or PCM. If that is the case you have 3 choices:

1) Replace the gasket - cheapest but it will fail again. Design flaw.

2) Purchase a billet pan kit that eliminates the belly pan gasket. Solves that problem, cost is around $100 for the pan plus new gaskets.

3) Purchase a Mopar M1 intake. This eliminates the belly pan as well and gives you a little more power, especially at higher rpms. Also looks better. Cost with installation kit and gaskets will be $425-500.

I did the M1, it worked well for me. When I first put it on it did feel like I lost a little on the low end, but the high end rush really made up for it. Highway onramps are a blast now. Also has a really satisfying intake roar under WOT as well. The M1 also makes it much easier to work around. You can actually see the distributor and get your hand around it.

I did all these mods within 1-2 months of each other. K&N->PCM->M1->IAT relocate->Autolite 3923. I have always had the 180 t-stat.

Thanks Fellas. I already have the 180 thermostat installed and, ironically, the intake manifold has been replaced. Oil consumption is still a problem though so I will examine the M-1 option. By the way, my truck is a...
