Subject: LSD Carrier IP: Logged
Message: I was told that the ring gear for the stock 8.25 diff can not handle the Chrysler lsd. I have an opportunity to buy just the lsd carrier (no ring), and am now concerned that it wont just bolt on. Anybody done this sort of thing before? Any advise?
thanx

Message: dunno where you heard that from, sounds ( and smells) like someones blowing smoke up your a$$.
never heard of gears that couldn't "handle" a limited slip, all ring gears are made essentially the same, of a hardened steel, and made regardless of what type diff they are going to be used with. if you have doubts, or are thinking of uping gear ratios, now's the time, it'll be easier to mesh new gears than used ones, since the angle and contact patch has to be exact to the original setup or it'll roast those old gears fast, destroying your new LSD... get someone competent to do the swap and it should be fine, but make sure there is a warranty!

Message: so let me get this straight. The ring is the same regarless of the carrier, so that if I buy the lsd carrier, it should just bolt right on. If I do it myself, take the guts out of the pumpkin (not the pinion, just the ring and carrier) unbolt the ring and put it on the new lsd carrier, I should just be able to drop it back in the slot and torque it down. Now what about the mesh? Will taking it out and putting it back in without changing the pinion make a difference in the mesh? I did a chunk swap (ring and carrier only) on a chevy S-10 a few years ago and it seemed to be fine (no wierd sounds and no one has complained since then).
I am trying not to spend money if I dont have to - which is the way most of us are doing it, eh?
by the way, I appreciate your response, especially at 3:30 in the morning.

Message: hehe... yeah, 3:30 am, Im an insomniac. I hit the internet just before I get ready to go to bed,
as long as you can get it out, the carrier I mean, sometimes they require a case spreader to widen the gap to pull it out, but so long as the mesh is fine, you should be set. oh, yeah, the gears bolt pattern is the same, and definitely use new ring gear bolts on it, once torqued down once their usually past use if tried to torque em down again. more than likely the case dimensions are going to be slightly off, but so long as you have a dial indicator, and gear mesh paste ( it tells the foot or contact area) to set the prub pattern back to where it originally was you should be good to go. the shims that are already there might have to be shuffled from one side to the other, but it should already be close enough to get you started on the mesh contact.
Good luck!
