Subject: Racing a 4x4 dak. IP: Logged
Message: the dak im getting is 4x4 I hear people say why race a 4x4? well ive been thinking a bit and ive noticed the dakotas have a nice power and the 1 I drove when I floored it in 2 wheel from the start all I did was sit and spin the tires...
If I put it in 4 Hi to take the launch and as soon as I hit 2nd drop it back in 2 wheel drive wouldnt I have a MAJOR advantage over a 2 wheel drive dakota?
maybe im just slow and dont understand to much im sure the 4x4 weights more but still... its like lining a Subaru Wrx (lets say 300HP) up with a Honda Civic (lets say 300 hp also) all the honda is gonna do is spin the tires if floored from the start and the subaru would grab like hell.

Message: I don't think that will work well, if at all. Normally to get the xfer case to disengage it takes at least a lift in power, at most it must be driven in reverse.

Message: I use 4x mode sometimes when it's raining and I need to cross an intersection quickly... lots of cars, limited time to get across, slippery road. Perfect time for a no-slip takeoff. So, yes, it works. The problem is that it won't drop back into 2x mode while you're accelerating. Depending upon your speed, I don't even think it'd be a good idea to try and shift. I'm sure there's something in the manual about that. ;)

Message: I dono maybe its different in the dakota... my GMC jimmy lets me shift to and from 4hi and out at any speed less than 60MPH but the only way to unlock the hubs is reversing and I dont see any problem in stoping after a race and unlocking them.

Message: With mine, it seems that I have to at least let off the throttle to get it to shift. I believe the owners manual also states that you shouldn't shift over 40? mph?

Message: Do what I did, get a AWD (all wheel drive) QC Dakota. I only lock 4 wheel drive when in very deep snow.

Message: You will run a slower speed, and time. Ive never done it, but my freinds ZR2 runs slower every time he tries it with his 150 shot.

Message: I only use it for the initial jump off the line, once first is wound up, I bump it back into 2WD. The difference between spinning the first 60ft and 2 gears or just leaping forward and pulling multiple car length holeshots on any and everything.
