Subject: 3" from the "y" pipe??? help???
IP: Logged

Message:
I just put on my gibson cat back 3" side. Wow thats a great product, sounds a lot better than that magnaflow dual set up and it feels faster. I was talking with a friend with a durango and he did a 3" from the y pipe to the tip of the exhaust. He has a high flow cat and he said that when he did it he noticed a lot more power, he has some type a turbo muffler and he loves it, I am thinking of doing it this weekend, i found a shop to do the whole thing for 250. my question is will i loose a lot of torque? and will this effect my emissions any? Has any one done this set up? please help!

It should help quite a bit. If you change your exhaust diameter by 1/2" it should only help. Anymore would begin to hurt performance. I'd upgrade to a larger throttle body though to allow for more incoming air. Add some 1.6RR's and a cam and you'll be screamin.

3 inches on the 5.9 should actually increase torque figures, dual 3's would definately hurt them though. There is a threshold with these motors where more isn't always better but I don't think 3 inches is too much.

I wouldn't recommend doing the whole system 3". Your going to move your torque/hp higher up in the powerband, where you will only benefit from it at 4000-6000 rpm.

As long as you're keeping it a single, then 3" all the way back will be good and should help alot.

Well I did it this weekend and I dont know the jury is still out, it dose feel like I lost some low end torque but I dont know. I had the gibson on for a week and I noticed power from that and now that I did the 3" it feels like it did befor the catback. But Damn it sure is a lot louder, it sounds real tough never heard another dakot around here that sounded that way, I like it. I got to talking to the guy at the muffler shop and he's got a set of mopar 1.6 rollers that he is going to sell me for fifty bucks and there almost brand new, he sold that truck and kept the rockers and some other parts. So I am going to give them a try, but whats the best way to get back that torque, I have a 360 intake and thats it so far, whats after the rockers? Thanks for all the input!!

Check out http://www.newcovenant.com/Speedcrafter/uploads/Exhaust.htm

Taken from that page:
So, do I pipe the car for its displacement, or for its power output? For street use, we lean toward displacement. Smaller pipes will enhance low-end torque, while sacrificing some small amount of top-end horsepower.
Based upon his flow data, he recommends a 3" single pipe, or a 2.5" dual for your application.

To see some torque gains, you'll have to mess with the lift. Again, check out the articles at the site for information regarding this and the related components that you'll have to look at to properly match the flow to your new intake.
