I'm new to the Mopar/Dak world, however I'm about to purchase a dakota R/T or a 4.7 v8 5spd both will have 2wd and a club cab... I will have about $5000 to spend after I get it. What would be the best set-up for street/strip ** i will only be going to the strip (1/8 mile) like once a week for "test n tune" so it's nothing serious. Please let me know what you guys think. Any advice WILL be appreciated!

While both motors are great options, you will find the aftermarket for the 5.9 to be much larger.

BIG FAT DITTO TO THAT!

The aftermarket jumped straight from DC's 5.9 to the HEMI... right over the 4.7. Luckily, they are putting the 4.7 in the new Dakotas, Durangos, and some of the Jeeps to keep the motor in production.

On top of that, mods on a 5.9 are a dime a dozen. For the 4.7, they run $200 each (cams, TB, intakes, etc.).

I own a 2002 4.7 Dak and if I had the choice, I would go for the 5.9. The 4.7 is a great motor, but there just isnt enough on the aftermarket to make it easy to mod. It is so easy to buy every thing you can think of for that 5.9. Mileage is about the same, despite what some people say. Besides the 5.9 yields more hp when you free up the air flow than the 4.7

This guy posts regularly on dakotausa.com and dodgetrucks.org.

High 13's with really not alot of mods on slicks. Not bad i'd say. Get some good cams, a PCM flash, some slicks, and a decent suspension and your in business.

Seems to be an ok swap, lots of work and lots of cash, myself I'm going with a built 46re which can be had for between 1400-1700$ which is a lot less than a 5 speed swap.
