Subject: engine swap? IP: Logged
Message: OK, so if my wife is reading this: Yes honey, we will get the dinnette set....
now, the question: I have been toying with the idea of buying an older RAM 1500 with a 340 or 360 in it (a basket case body) and shoe horn it into my Dak. Can my V6-5 speed bolt up to a 360 block, or will I need 1) a new transmission, 2) an adapter or 3) leave it alone and get the damn dinnette set. Also, if it does bolt up, will I need to be careful so that I dont destroy the transmission with the extra ponies a motor of that size would deliver?
I thought that if I can pick up a real beater and give the motor some TLC it can serve as quite a nice mod for my 98 standard cab short box.
comments?

Message: how much older of a ram?
the V6 shares the same bellhousing bolt pattern as the 5.9/5.2 but i wouldnt necessarily bolt a V6 tranny to a V8.

Message: Is that because of the difference in potential HP - the transmission wont handle more than a couple of hundred horses? Is there an alternative other than keeping the automatic (I'd hate to go that route if I can help it).
I expect that cost will be a big factor too, so the 5.9l will remain relatively stock (except for the cheap mods).

Message: oh, another thing, if my memory serves me correctly, your 98 once used to be a V6 too, right? Mine is also a 98 standard cab with a short box (it was the most base version I think Chrysler made - rubber carpet, plastic door skins, steel wheels with plastic cap - real basic). As a result, I have much to work with and it can only get better than what it started as.

Message: well an important thing is to know what year ram you are thinking of getting the motor from. If you get a magnum 5.9, it will just bolt right in. If you get a LA 5.9, you will need different motor mounts. The five speed could bolt up and function.. but it's only a matter of time.
my truck was a 3.9/42re, now it's a 6.6/727TF. I had to build my own motor and tranny mounts.

Message: I have a heated garage, many of the needed tools and much of the needed enthusiasm to build an engine for my Dak. I just sold my 1937 Pontiac that I brought back from the dead (sitting in a farmer's field since 1964)
Was your motor a crate longblock or did you do something like what I am thinking about and massaging old stuff back to new?
and by the way, thanks for taking the time out and giving me the benefit of your experience

Message: If you're gonna stay with a stick, you need something stronger. The AX-15 is pretty light, just can't handle much torque. If you're wanting a 5-speed, that limits you to more recent models, and the $ goes up. You may save some time gleaning ideas from here: http://www.keislerauto.com/mopar/dakota.html

Message: friggin awsome! of course, up here in Canada, whatever the price is posted, we need to double it and that is about what it would cost here (so 8 grand is a wee bit much). So what to do? I might get lucky and find a standard Ram 1500 - they gotta be available, right?
If, however, I do use the AX-15, and not push it (I have no aspirations of drag racing this truck, its only the desire to make it unique - right!) I should be ok. When it breaks, I can either drop in an automatic, or sell it to a teenager as a rice burner!
must keep doing my research.
By the way, this site rocks - I have learned a tonne of information over the last few months!

Message: wait, another question to intenseDAK39 - since you went with a carb on your BB 6.6l, did you use the on board computer for anything? and if not what did you do about guages (speedo, tach, fuel, temp etc)?
I am assuming you went aftermarket digital stuff and made a custom dash insert? I think that is what I would do.

Message: i kept the computer and pulled out all the pins i thought i didnt need. I was hoping to keep the fuel gauge and speedo but the only factory gauge that works is volts.
Right now i have the following aftermarket gauges in a custom gauge pod that goes where the stereo should be;
* voltometer
* water temp
* oil pressure
* tachometer (well, it's sitting in my ash tray)
when i finally do build a dash, i will move all those gauges to it and add a speedo and fuel gauge. Also the fuel gauge will have to wait until i get a fuel cell with a sending unit.
