Subject: Never buy a Dodge again IP: Logged
Message: I got to tell you that I'm throwing in the towel. After 5 years of talking up my Dakota and bashing (Fords, Chevys) and being in love with my truck - I'm getting a divorce from owing another Dodge again.
I have a 2000 Dodge Dakota, Sport Plus - Extended Cab, 4.7, Manual Trans. Jet Chip, Gibson Dual Exhaust, K&N Cold Air Intake. I've put alot of money into making this Dakota perform and boy does it run. The motor is real strong.
My reason for disgust: Transfer Case has been leaking since year 2000 and its been in the shop 7 times for the Transfer case leaking. It started leaking at 12K
My ball joints completely went.
74K miles and the transmission started leaking & it jumps out of first gear.
This truck has never been off road. 95% highway 5% dirt roads for fishing and hunting.
I understand that things can happen to any vehicle but how can Dodge explain a transfer case leaking after it has been 100% replaced with a new Mopar Transfer case (and this one is leaking also)?
I had a 1999 Dodge Caravan as my family vehicle and the tranny went out on it with 54,000 miles. My wife drove this V6 automatic.
I bought a Perf Assec. 3 in body lift for my truck that is still in the box and has been for 4 months now b/c I'm afraid of how much money it will cost me in repairs and how much stress the lift would cause once it gets lifted 3 inches and 33 in tires? I have 17 more payments so I can't go out and buy a new truck and have 5 yrs of payments all over so I'm stuck with it.
I wish Dodge would help me with some of the $$$ toward the repairs. I've contact them and they said they couldn't do anything. I've checked all the lemon laws in my state and it doesn't qualify as a lemon b/c the transfer case issues were 2 far apart. It just discust me to know end seeing 3 of my buddies who own Chevy Silverados beat the s%#t out of them and here I am driving to work on the highway with a nice trail of transfer case fluid following me since I've owned the truck......

Message: gee dumba$$ your trying to make a race truck out of a 4x4 and you wonder why the trasnfer case is leaking. Get rid of that worthless jet chip and call the service manager and ask them about another transfer case. There should be a 12 month 12,00 mile warranty on replacement parts.

Message: Sorry to here that man. I still think you have a great truck, you just gotta figure out what keeps causing the leaks. It could be as simple as a broken or worn-out mount or seal. In my experience, if you can fix it yourself your better off. No matter what brand truck I've had, dealers tend to give it back to me with worse or different problems. If you can't get Dogdge to help you with the fix, maybe you can get a used 00'-04' tranny and transfer case set-up at a junk yard with lower or no miles. It sounds like a pain, but it can save you tons of money AND you'll know whats going on under your vehicle when you make the swap. Just a thought.

Message: Hey JW, how often do you make a mistake at work? Nothing is impervious to failure at some point. No question regarding Dodge's complete reliability, but that is also the reason they are cheaper than their competitors. We bought the Dakota because it looks better and has a bigger engine than any other similar sized truck. I guarantee that those new Toyota/Nissan full size have problems as well.
With regard to your dealer, take the truck back every week until they get sick of seeing your face. Question the maint/general manager about their products right in front of their potential customers. Don't be belligerent, just persistent. Good luck.

Message: did you know that the transfer case in your dakota is the same one that is in the chevy trucks also? The ball joints are made by TRW which also supply many other brands with suspension parts. All cars and trucks, be it dodge, ford or chevy, share many parts. Just because it says dodge on the tailgate does not mean that dodge built every last part on the vehicle and the same goes for every other vehicle built on earth. A car manufacturer designs the vehicle and goes to hundreds of different suppliers and buys from the most economical bidder (cheapest) ALL of them do this. You may have a problem with any vehicle regardless of the brand. For instance the dell computer you are using right now may have the same processor in it that the chevy lover's gateway has in it-you never know. Of course I did not see you bashing the components that chrysler actually built (engine and trans). Have you ever visited the pistonslap.com website for the gm vehicles or have you noted the head gasket failures on the 4.6 & 5.4L v-8s in the ford trucks?? If you hate your dakota so much, go buy a colorado or a ranger and see what you think. See you at the stoplights.

Message: I dont know about all of you, but I have owned them all, Chevy (S10 4X4) first then Ford (Ranger 4X4) now 98 Dakota 4X4 5.2 5spd. Cat/Back and an AIRRAID I bought it with .5 miles on it in July 98, it has 113,543 miles now its paid off and it still runs and looks great, Yes it had it moments, I had my days with the dealer, but over all I choose the Dodge over Chevy or Ford they do not compare.
Fix your truck and stop Bitchen....

Message: Im a 17 year old, and i got a Dakota cuz i know a lotta people who havnt had any problems 140,000+ miles. I have a 2000 Quad Cab with 132,000 miles and its so reliable its not funny. Maybe you just have realllly bad luck JW, cuz ive never heard of problems like that. Also, if u put alot of mods on ur truck, u shouldnt expect it to last as long as a truck with factory parts. Sorry if ur Chevy has the same problems as your Dodge, cuz my parents keep breakin down with serious problems.

Message: The Dakota does have it's flaws. Ball joints is the most obvious example. For $80 you can buy greasable ones and never have to worry about them again. It's only the upper joints that are causing people problems. The lowers are greasable already. I saw a latest generation Chevy Z71 in a Wal Mart parking lot about a week ago that obviously had a ball joint problem too. He was going around a corner and his left front wheel fell off and he veered into one of those big yellow posts by the handicapped spots. Big yellow dent down the side of his fender. I bent over and looked and his lower ball joint had come apart. What you have to remember is that if you buy a different brand truck, you will be dealing with a whole new set of problems. I have owned Chevy and Ford and have had no more or fewer problems with my Dodge than either one, just different ones. At least you know the flaws with the vehicle you already own. IMHO the Dakota, although a 7+ yr old design is still the best looking truck on the road. Sit down and think about your options and do research on the other brands problems before you do something irrational just because you are frustrated. I did find one thing useful one of the earlier posters said - Get rid of the Jet chip. The 4.7 computer learns around it and renders it useless. Try to sell it on Ebay and at least recoup part of your investment.
