I have a 97 Dakota with 38.5" swampers. I have about 120K miles with about 60K of those with the swampers. I just know that I am on borrowed time with the transmission. It hasent started acking up at all, but I want to be prepared when the time comes to yank it. I can't really seem to find any good information on heavy duty swap or rebuild options. I don't want to go to a 727. I would rather swap it with a drop in that is stronger than the 44re. Does any one know what the strongest stock dakota tranny is? Does anyone know of a rebuilder (TCI or JET etc) that offers a heavy duty rebuild for one of the A500 series transmissions? Does adding a shift kit to a stock tranny actually make it any stronger or just shift tighter? Thanks for the help guys.

Hughes Performance makes a nice kit for the A-500. www.hughesperformance.com I have there race kit with the kolene steel clutches and it seems very nice. I only have 10 1/8th mile passes on the trans so far though. SMR transmission also makes nice kits for the A-500 but they are a little higher in price and are not any stronger or better from what I've heard. SMR's website is www.smrtrans.com

Thanks guys for the help Hughes looks like the place to go. Does anyone know if a shif kit can save an old transmission with slipping clutches and bands? Also, do torque converters "wear out"? A "friend" was telling me that the fins can flex and loose thier shape over time making the torque converter less efficient and more sloppy. Thanks again

you friend is correct... factory TC are not very particular in precision.. they dont expect you to be taking a new truck off road for performance ( or entertainment) they put the same ones in all of em. so they are tyypically set up for "normal street use" over time they can wear out... but the loss is minimal(I have a 1965 Mustang...dont hate me, I also own an R/T... thats still running on the stock factory TC.. its almost forty years old!) for any serious off road use, I'd definitely look into an aftermarket Torque Converter..

the only way to go with worn bands or clutches is a trans pak, but I;m not sure if one is available.. its basically a shift kit/rebuild kit with better/more clutches..... a shift kit alone might end up shortening the life of the clutches and bands, as the main function of a shift kit is to shorten the time that it takes to engage said parts... thus it would be effectively "slamming" them together, and if they are heavily worn, it might just chew em up...I've seen plenty of trannys with higher miles on em that people slapped shift kits into, nad it just destroyed the clutches....
