 Subject: size of stock y on 4.7L?

what size is the pipe running from the headers to the exhaust pipe on a 2000 4.7L? I want to replace that disgusting factory crushed down y-pipe for a mandrel one and am wondering if the stock pipes can be retained.

I'm not sure of the size, may be 1.75" at the most, but it was sure small looking once I had mine cut off. Only thing stock on my exhaust is the manifolds and the precats. After that it's 2.25" back to a Gibson dual in/dual out, and duals to the rear bumper. I'm real pleased with it.
A while back, before I went with true duals, I purchased a Flowmaster 'Y' pipe off of ebay. I believe it was dual 2.25" into a single 3". It sure made a difference in how much louder it got.

I believe the stock piping is 2.5" on the 2000 4.7L. I was measurin the tailpipe, so I mean, the rest of it could be a different size. Not quite sure.

I just added a A/F sensor at this point the Y is a diff set up as one pipe is on top of the other and I cast my vote for the tubes being 2.25 OD

It is no larger (inner diameter) than 2" Ask jba they make a replacement Y pipe for some years of dakota, maybe yours too

Wrap a flexible tape measure around the pipe and divide the result by 3.14....

thanks lurkin, couldn't think back to geometry and how to fid the desired measurement.
Are the two sections were the pipe comes together crushed? just curious.

I looked back through some old posts, and 2" seems to be the primary tube size before the "Y". It also got me to remembering my old '92 5.2 with its 2 1/4" (I think) into 3" "Y", and the possibilities on the 4.7.

the jury is still out on what I'm going to do. I will probable keep the stock y and go back with a 3inch pipe turned down befor ethe axle. or get a real muffler for my 2.5 inch exhaust.
im not as bad off only being a singal cat truck, and that thing has been gone for about ten thousand miles.
