I just posted this on the v-8 board but this is probably a better bet. I just bought a 99 dakota, but the seller snatched the muffler off of it before we got to it. Now I get to put whatever I want in it, but I don't know what's what as for as mufflers are concerned.
I've got the 5.2 ltr and truthfully, I really like the way it sounds now. also, the performance os truely amazing and I'd hate to give any up from a bad muffler choice.
also, what other cheap mods would you guys recomend ...just to keep performance up?

What? The seller took the muffler off and you didnt notice before signing the papers? Or you bought it and while you were in transit to pick it up he snatched it before you got there? I dont understand it but....
Spintech,Flowmaster,Dynomax all sound pretty good. They all flow pretty good too.
As for mods,get a cold air, headers/exhaust, and gears. For $1200-$1500 you could potentially get another 25hp and a gear swap(3.92/4.10) would get you into your powerband quicker. I swapped to a 4.56 from a 3.92 in my truck and love it. I dont know about the 5.2 but on the r/t the entire exhaust setup is pitiful. Headers and new pipes will let it breathe which all of the rest of your mods will need. Good luck man.

I mean that we looked at the truck, test drove it, and decided that we were not able to continue life without it. a week later we picked it up and my girl said "doesn't this thing seem a little louder?"
the seller says that the little bastard came by and snatched up the muffler when he saw it was sold. she's dealing with him, but she told me to pick out the exaust I want, buy it and bill her. then take it to her mechanic and she'll have him put it on.

I don't know how much you will drive this Dakota or where, or how much gas costs you, but 4.56 gears are going to kill your gas mileage. I would think this truck would suck driving at freeway speeds too.

the best flowing mufflers are Gibson, they only have a 5% restriction, plus they sound great on the 5.2
