Subject: Anyone tried this free mod for the 4.7?

Sounds like a free shift kit. I saw this on another Dodge board.

"On the 4.7L engine you can disconnect the tranny comunication wire from the plug in the tcm. All it does is it tells the motor when the tranny is going to shift therefore cutting fuel to the cyclenders (smooother less head jerking shifts). Well if you disconnect that wire the engine still delivers fuel and shifts alot better with no hesitation. Ive had this done for at least 10,000 miles no codes and no problems at all. I put mine on a toggle switch so I can run stock most of the time but when I run her I flip the switch and bingo instant free shift kit. It is the yellow wire with green stipe On the 3rd plug closest to the headlight on the passenger side fender. TCM wire plug black in color. there will be 3 plugs in a row together its going to be the one closest to the headlight. "

wow I can't wait for my lunch break now. However if memory serves me rite. There are multiple wires on the bottom harness, how would you put the connector on a toggle?

Jeff W have you tried this yet.

They're talking still about the Torque Reduction Request wire. It runs from the TCM to the PCM and retards timing on the shifts. What people do is clip the wire, extend the two wire halves back to a switch in the cab, and voila, switch-controlled harder shifts.

I still don't see how this could possibly be good for the tranny, which is why I still refuse to do it.

yeah I read it again, and should have picked this up. Its not really making the shift itself faster just firmer. I guess in theory you would have more momentum and power in the next gear.

I got home from work this afternoon and pulled the harness. I cut the yellow wire with the green stripe and took 'er for a drive.

With normal driving I didn't notice any change at all.

At wide open throttle the 1-2 shift was MUCH better than it was before. The little lag just before and after the shift was gone and it really surged forward with the shift. It wasn't harsh or abrupt at all, just noticeable less slushy. The 2-3 shift was also improved.

I like it. :)

MM, this mod only works on the auto's used with the 4.7's and Hemi's.

It was actually the Hemi guys who first found it and someone figured out that it worked on the 4.7's too.

BTW, the Hemi guys are claiming 4 tenths off their quarter mile times with this mod.

Other than the fact that it voids your warranty, none that I'm aware of. Some guys on the DTW board have over 20,000 miles on theirs.

I'm going to wire mine to a toggle switch. Sounds like a good idea.

I clipped the wire on mine last fall. I noticed a difference in the shift firmness, but it wasn't a big difference. Note though that I have an 02 AWD, and I suspect that the AWD drivetrain "soaks" up some of the firmness.

Before you buy a switch and the wire to extend it, you might try just clipping the wire. As someone said above, during normal driving there isn't much change, it's just during full(er) throttle runs that it's noticeable.

I wonder if most of the computer programmers tell the PCM to disregard this wire. I beleive my optimizer II keeps the injectors from dropping during shifts.

I think I will try it and see as I am off waranty anyway.

there was mention above that the Hemi guys found this out; I have an 04' Hemi Durango....will it work on it like it did/does for the Ram Hemi guys?? If so, please elaborate on where this harness is and I will get back to the group after my lunch break when I'm tearing apart my brand new car!!!

conig, I believe that I read somewhere that the Opt-II does "disconnect/ignore" the TMR signal.

Eddie Orlando- I may be wrong but I don't think it works on vehicles built after 2002.

Check out the boards over at DTW, I'm sure they can shed more light on it for you.

hey guys,

I just wanted to throw in my 2 cents.

The mods works VERY well. I have wired a toggle switch os I can turn it on or off at will.

Like someone said earlier, it WILL void your tranies warentee.

The reason that I think you should have the toggle is because when you are on the free way and you hit the gas hard it will not shift down to a lower gear. Instead it will just keep pushing. This is something some of you may not want.

The mod works wonders though. Make sure to RESET YOUR PCM that made a big diff for me. I am getting new tires and rims in a week when they come in so I am shreading the old tires (probably not smart but I like it). I can burn out though first seacond and part of third. You may not get your truck to bark but If I press it it will ALWAYS peal out in second and sometimes third will chirp.

Just thought I would chime in.

Always Thankfull,
Ben J.

P.S. SORRY for the terible spelling and sentence structure.

Ben, mine still downshifts just fine...

jeff, from what I understand the 2003+ moved to a single PCM/TCM controller. So you are correct, you can't clip a wire that isn't there.
