Subject: R/T Tires, what're people using.. IP: Logged
Message: I need to get new tires for all five, yeah, I've smoked the hell out of all of em, including the spare, and was wondering what people are using on their trucks.. I want a better performance than the Eagle RSA, I personally think they suck. I was checking out Pirelli's Scorpion zero, it's what comes on the SRT10 Ram/ and the F1 from goodyear, but it seems that VERY FEW companies offer the 255/55 R17 tire size.... and if ya change tire size, it throws off the speedo, and consequentially, the odometer..
any thoughts?

Message: I've never bought into the whole expensive tire thing. I use the Kumho 255/55/17 at tirerack.com They go for $80 each I think.

Message: how do they hold in turns? I'm sick of loosing traction on freeway ramps. how do they launch?
the RSA's I have on my truck get squirelly taking off, I tend to fishtail away from lights and at launch at the track. I want a lot better grip, I don't care the cost.
Thanks for the name though.

Message: I drive like a nut and take turns at 80 easily where others are on
their brakes at 55. But I am lowered 2" all around. They are
grippy and the best tire I've used in the rain so far. Not
impressed with BFG or Dunlop in the water.

Message: Yeah, the Kum Hoes look good as far as performance, but for 35 bucks more ya can get the pirelli scorpion zero, which has a more aggressive aggearance, and performs better...
Okay, for anyone else that sees this post, I did some math, a 255/50 R17 is only 8cm, or ironically 3.14 inches ( cause thats pi, for the slow people, the calculating number to figure circumference of a circle) less than the 255/55 r17, and there's tons more available in that size. it's gonna throw your speedo a little over actual speed though. OR you can go a 255/60 R17 still, more choices than the 255/55R17, and its over in circumference the same amount, so your speedo would show slower than actual a bit.
Still curious as to anyone else that may be runnning a different size tire on there truck, what they'd recommend.... I had anohter R/T I did dumb sh#t with it, like put 275/40's, rims were like 2in off the ground,, ended up damaging about every curb I came close to, by shaving chunks of my rims off on em. it sure did grab going into turns though!! I took a 180 degree exit ramp (those that have been through Atlanta, on 75S going to 85N, you should know what I'm talking about) at 110, never lost a bit of traction, dumb as hell, but I did it....

Message: But for the money...the Kumho's are awesome. I've got the 255/55-17's. They grip really well through turns and the wet traction is great.

Message: I agree with the crapy Eagle RSA...so I am currently running with 275/50/17 NITTO tires...the size difference hasen't thrown off my speedo all that much, about 2 mph or so...I can live with that..still lose traction in the rain though, but what do you expect with these R/T's

Message: hehe... yeah that limited slip with the massive gear ratio, added to the fact that theres hardly any weight over the rear, they get wild in any rain.... 275/ 50's hmm....how bad did it affect your fuel economy... I know that the wider you go, the more it hurts it, since it takes more effort to shovethe air outta the way.... I was considering the 315/40, but wasn't too sure if they'd clear on the front turning radius.. SO, I 'think' that I might go to the 255 60's... just to get more tire options, and a fill my wheel well abit more. I'm not sure which brand yet, but thanks for the info on the nittos and the kumhos, I'll be checking them out.

Message: Yeah man, that calculator was made for the Miata.net site, which is the home of probably the BEST auto specific forum in the world!
Miata.net's forum has got over 20,000 members and approximately more information than every other forum put together! It really is great if you have a Mazda Miata!
I've got a Miata and am switching to an R/T ASAP, before I go off to college. A 2200 pound, two seat convertible is not practical for campus life! Well, I guess an R/T isn't the most practical vehicle I could choose, but hell, I'm 18 dammit!
I'll definitely be posting here more often with questions about the soon-to-be-mine 5.9 R/T.

Message: hehe, hey vince, where are ya going to college? I'm enrolled to startthis fall at University of Miami.... consider the trade good! in either vehicle, you can only seat two people, but in a Dakota you can haul a lot more in the bed ( you could almost fit yer miata back there! LOL)... plus the reg cab comes in at 4000lbs, and gets decent fuel mileage...my R/T averages 20 in city, and over 25 on hwy... and Ive modified it too. have you seen the Miata's with a ford 302 in em? those are nuts...

Message: I just got the Good year Eagle F1 GS-D3 285/40/17. They are wide as hell, have a bad ass tread pattern and grip like nothing else, even in the rain. The soft rubber compound has its drawbacks though, they tend to wear pretty quickly, so you have to take it easy. Cant be spinin the tires at every stoplight.

Message: I was wanting to go with the gs-d3's but the load rating is too low, I use my truck to haul stuff with too, the tires are barely able to handle the weight of the truck alone.....Good year has a "sport Truck" version of the F1, its called a wrangler F1, same tread style, but much higher weight capacity....

Message: I'm thinking about trying either the 255/50/17 Goodyear Wrangler F1s or the 275/55/17 Pirelli Scorpion Zero Asimmetrico when my RS-As wear out, probably this fall. I know the Pirellis are the ones used on the new Ram SRT-10. I've always used Goodyears, no complaints, so I'm torn between the two.
