Subject: LSD vs. Lockers

So I've read this forum thoroughly and saw the arguments about lockers and limited slip. Basically my situation is that I have an open rear and I do a lot of street racing. My 2001 rc 4.7 auto spins the hell out of my right tire and I can't win anything. It takes a lot of feathering to get the starts right and I'm sick of it. Now I looked into PowerTrax No-Slip for a 9.25 open and I'm wondering if that's the right choice or should I go with a Auburn LSD? I don't want locking noises or chirps around corners, but some say the powertrax won't do that. However, the LSD will still spin my tire(s), just not as much. I just wanted some input so I don't waste my money.

Power trax is a good "drop-in" piece! But I'd say for a street-used vehicle, it might be worth the extra cash to get an auburn installed. limited slips are much better for turning traction....Lockers, like the powertrax unit, disconnect the tire moving fastest ( I think.. Im kinda tired, if it isn't always, it can happen sometimes)...meaning that the tire inside the turn is doing all the pushing of the vehicle. KEEPING that in mind, think about weight transfer going on during a freeway on ramp.. all the weight is on the opposite side.... you can still lose traction due to only one tire pushing, and the other doing nothing. need proof, go to an empty parking lock and do a few donuts, you'll see only one tire mark... on an LSD you'll see two deep dark marks from BOTH tires forcing power to the ground, and the turn radius will be smaller, since all th power is in line with the vehicle, shoving it laterally along its center of gravity, instead of off center to the vehicle.

Another option would be to install a rear swaybar, and traction bars, to stiffen up the rear suspension, it helps to plant the Left tire....Im sure you understand that the engines torqueing lifts the body to the left, while twisting the axle to the clockwise, or passenger side...the swaybar and traction bars help to control the body roll, and suspension sag that happens under those forces...especially in a truck that has most of its weight centered over the front tires....

typically lockers are for offroad use, on the street they lose half the power force to one of the wheels during a turn. However the cost to tear apart and rebuild your entire differential may be a crunch point, unless you're also planning to swap gears out too... some places can also screw up the reinstall of used gears, soo use a GOOD company with a known reputation, one that'll preferably give you some kind of warranty...Rear drive axle shops are hard to get good info on, since the introduction of front wheel drives.....

I have a Dakota R/T with LSD stock, and I have a 65 stang with a detroit locker... Lockers are great for straight shots, but SUCK for turns and street use.... you can snap axle shafts if you're not careful, but the Powertrax don't seem to present that problem though. With a true locker, if you make a turn under power without going a bit straight first before entering into your turn to give it a chance to disengage, you'll throw the ass end out into traffic, or worse shatter an axle shaft....

I hope this info helps, I went to an Auto tech school for high performance Drive trains, engines, and Brake systems. I dropped out in my final two classes to go to college for engineering....so this tech info should be the best I can provide, and I'd lie to think that I know what i;m talking about...

Basically, my simplified response would be to go with the Auburn if you can afford the expense, and while you're at it, swap to a higher ration gear too, you'll save time doing both at once, and LOVE the gains....

damn! I;ve been long winded...I just hope this info helps..

Thanks matt. Your information was real helpful. I have a friend who's dad specializes in rear ends so I might get away with a cheap swap. What gears should I swap to? 3.92?

Check on the Dana Trak-Lok from www.4wheelparts.com

It's less expensive then the Auburn LSD.

3.92 is a decent gear, its what comes stock in the R/T's... great performance, without TOO much sacrifice of highway driving speeds...

Screw the trak lok, It is the stock one dodge putz in, and it sucks. Go with the auburn, It's worth it. i pounded my dak for 3 months before breaking the trak lok, then 4 months later it got hung up in a creek, and blew it apart again. I've had the auburn for a year and a half now, and it has never failed me. I drive hard through the woods, and on the street. my truck is by no means pretty, but It is abused, and this auburn rear is the best mod so far.

Have you considered an Air Locker? Open differential until you push the button, then it's a spool. You'll get the best of both worlds.

its not the best of both worlds when you're still running an open diff in rain or curves.. air lockers work best for offroading,,, ever taken a clover style freeway exit at 80? you couldn't pay me to try that with anything but a LSD/auburn style unit... plus, when you blow your air line, and it will happen, your back to just a plain old open unit. to me their too expensive/high maintence for what you get. the Auburn is the best LSD for strreet use. When I destroy my stock LSD I'm swapping to the auburn, but I haven't had probs with the stock unit YET, only 60k miles on my truck now...Im waiting for it to go... The auburn is a conical style LSD< while the stock is a plate style..
damn all this talk of LSD is giving me a flashback....hehehe
