Subject: Help!!! Blown Head Gasket IP: Logged
Message: I have just installed a new set of Ported RT heads & a Paxton Supercharger (9lbs) on my 94 Dakota 5.2 w/ almost every bolt on mod already done. Anyways I installed a set of SCE copper head gaskets .090 thick & a set of ARP head studs torqued to 125 ft lbs, well within a 1/2 block, not even 5 mins, I blew a head gasket (coolant pumping out of the radiator). I intially had a bad feeling with the using the SCE's since I did not O-ring the block, but I was told I would be alright.
My question to you is should I put it back together with a set of cometics or some other gaskets, or have the heads o-ringed. I do not really want to o-ring the block because this winter I plan to build a 408 w/ the current top end & SC.
I greatly appreciate any advice.

Message: Copper head gasket are very finicky. The surfaces must be perfectly flat. Perfect.
Pull them and use a better type.

Message: Pull 'em and put some cometics in. But more importantly, figure out why they blew. I'm not familiar with the copper gaskets, so I don't know if it was the gaskets fault, or your tune. Take it to a dyno and make sure your a/f is good before you romp on it (or verify yourself if you have a wideband O2). BTW, I'm running the cometics with my Paxton, seeing 10-11lbs on a 5400 shift.

Message: bad360rt,
Which thickness cometic gaskets did you go with, in their catalog they list a supercharged magnum gasket @ .120 thick but that seems extreme. BTW, I spoke to SCE today & they only suggest to use the copper gaskets w/ o-ringed block or heads because they do not seal any imprefections.
