Message: I have come to conclusion that my u-joints on the driveshaft or the tension pully on my 1999 dak 4x4 3.9 auto are going out... ill state why later if u guys want, but i want to hear from you guys what each problem can cause or what sound they would make of one or the other had a problem with it ( i am trying to narrow it down what it really is). Thanks for your help and any info on how/what/why these 2 things would go out on me what to do or its seriousness. sorry for the weirdish question but its in order for me to get a hint here.. thanks fellas ill check back soon

Message: U-joints can do all sorts of stuff when going bad. They can squeek, click, vibrate, clunk, or do nothing at all! I had one just come apart, no warning, just flew apart, and left my driveshaft clunking off the grond. Most of the time they will clunk, or squeek. Jack the truck up, and put on jack stands. Then put it in neutral, and do not set the park brake. get under the truck, and grab the driveshaft. spin it both directions, while looking at the U-joint. Do the same while looking at all of your U-joints. A bad one will have slop in it. It will probably clunk a little bit too. you can get them pretty cheap, under $20, and they are easy to put in if you know how to do it, but if you dont have the heart to beat on your driveshaft with a big hammer, take it to somebody else. I'm not really sure how you narrowed your problem down to 2 problems that are so different? Your U-joints will only make noise while the truck is moving, but the tensioner will do it anytime the truck is running. Tensioners can squeek, or click when going bad, usually clicking. If it makes the noise in park or neutral it is not drive train related. Hope this helps!

Message: thanks that sounds great... i also got told to put it in park and rev the engine to see if the sound happens. i did that and no sound occured ( therefor i thought it was the u-joints ( larry hinted to me that it could be the problem). however, when i was coasting down a hill around 35mph i put the tranny in nuetral and reved the engine while coasting and the sound happened. It will not happen in park, or standing still, but whe ni put the car in nuetral the sound happend as if it was in drive. therefor it cant be the u joints right? or are the u joints connected while the car is moving in nuetral with the engine revving? thanks for the help, its like a sandy mesh sound, but more like metalic though... so i was wondering (some friends/fam) simple just asked if it was the intake minifold ( if it was leakin or anythnig)... therefore i was wondering what the symptomes of a leaking intake minifold would be? thanks
