If you do alot of highway miles you might want to try a bed cover. You can squeeze out a little more.

Message: There are a few things you could do, but in your case you may not be able to afford them. For example:
1. You could get a slightly less restrictive exhaust which may help on the highway, but the total cost would outway the total savings in gas.
2. You could get a less restrictive intake i.e. k&n, but it would not save much.
Either way you would spend more on these products than you would save in gas.
Sorry for the bad news, but 16mpg is good for a 4x4.

Message: Sell the Dakota, buy a Ford Ranger, 2x4, 4 cyl, 5 speed stick. That's about the best you can do with a pick up, mileage wise.
I Love my QC. But no matter how you look at it, fuel efficency is not one of it's strong points. I drove through northern CO last Sunday. Two lane black tops, 60'ish mph. Average 16.5 mpg.

Message: I have a RT and drive 90+ miles a day. I put a cover on my bed and this made a difference I went from 13 up to 15 miles per gallon with just a cover. I also put a less restrictive exhaust and intake they didnt make much difference at all. They might of made .5 mpg difference.

Message: Oh come on...."and you dont have that much more power than me" I guess you have never driven a v8 dakota. A v6 3.9 engine stock has 175 hp and 225 ft-lbs torque. A 4.7 engine stock has 235 hp and 295 ft-lbs torque. Most of us v8's have the HO cams and intake manifold. So estimate 255hp and 315ft-lbs torque. And if you can't do math that's roughly 80 hp and 90 ft-lbs torque. I'd rather have the power than the gas mileage, but that's just me.

Message: You have to be kidding me. 14-16 mpg is too low for you? What do you expect? You're driving a V-8 4x4. I'm getting about 15.5 according to my gauge. I'm ecstatic. Definetly good gas consumption for doing about 75 mph, and havin my big V-8. If it's too much on gas for ya, maybe you oughta look at getting a little rice rocket.

Message: idk what these people r talkin about with gaining hardly any miles with intakes, but I bought a 360 cold air intake about a year ago and i get almost 3 mpg better on the highway and about 2 better city. I have a 1997 5.2 V8 CC. The intake was only $180, and it saves me almost $300 a year on gas, it was one of the best investments I have ever made for my truck. I would highly suggest investing in one.

Message: 14-16? HA! I can only do better than 14 when Im REALLY light footed and it's consistently over 65 degrees out. Most of the time I'm at about 13.5, and that's city AND highway combined. Sounds like someone bought a little more truck than they can afford. Get rid of it. You're getting about the best mileage you probably ever will. Trade down. Trade WAY down. When I was making what you're makin in college, I drove a 4-banger Ranger and I couldn't even afford to do anything more than put gas in it. My Mom actually paid for maintenance. I don't know how youve held out this long. I now make over 50 a year and sometimes 40 bucks per tank still makes ME cringe.

Message: Matt,
I am just saying that on my truck a 2000 CC 5.9 I seen way more improvement to gas mileage with a bed cover than I did with the intake. Now I do not know if it is because of my AEM intake and dual flow master 40 series combination had anything to do with it. Did you just put a intake on your truck and if so what kind also what octane gas are you using? My truck went from getting about 13.5 to 15 when I placed a bed cover on it. Then when I put the intake and the exhaust on I only went to around 15.6 not really much of a change there. Although I do highly recommend a good intake it sounds better and performs better.

Message: I don't mean this as a cheap shot or personal attack of any kind, but I'm always a bit perplexed by people who buy a V8-powered vehicle then complain because it doesn't get the mileage of a 4 or 6 cylinder.
I've kept track of every tankful since I got my 02 4x2 CC 4.7/auto 3.55 LSD brand new back in June of 02 and it's pretty much always gotten between 14.5 and 16.5 in town... tad over 20 on long highway trips... which is every bit as good (if not better) than the 93 3.9/auto Dak I used to own... so I'm very satisfied. If gas mileage was my #1 concern I'd have bought a 4 cylinder (ugh!). But I wanted V8 power and with that comes a sacrifice at the pump. No big surprise.
If you think it costs too much to own now, try buying something new and making a loan payment every month on top of gas and insurance.

Message: Being the self proclaimed #1 mileage problem 4.7er on this board I'll offer you the only advice that truly works.
Ease up on the pedal. Put some gumout in your tank, drop in a K&N air filter and buy a Tanneu cover.
Covering your bed will improve your mpg by 2-4 mpg. Leaving it uncovered simply gives you a wind brake and causes drag.
Drive like Grandma moses. Never exceed 2k rpm when accelerating, and keep a constant speed when cruising, no slamming the pedal to pass. Just ease a little more on the pedal and pace yourself. Your going to get passed a lot and maybe even given the finger but simply changing your driving habits can give you 3-5 mpg.
Honest advice from the guy who has been battling his mileage since day 1.
BTW 4x4 eats up 1-2mpg over a standard 4x2. The price you pay for having an extra gear under that chasis.
The best I have seen out of a dakota 4.7 2000+ was 22 highway and 18.5 city. Keep that in mind. If those figures don't work for you then buy a honda. Not being mean just trucks and suvs aren't for people with cashflow problems.

Message: Jay, You didn't say how many miles are on your truck, have you changed the spark plugs? I use NGK plugs exclusivly(I know everyone else uses Autolites) but I get 18 on the hwy if kept under 70 and I have a 00 4x4 4.7 with 3.55 and 31" tires. The truck has an Airaid filter, Dynomax exhaust and NGK plugs. The stock # is 6987 and plug # ZFR6F-11G. Let me know if you cant find them, I keep them in stock. Hope this helps, Evan dakotaparts.com

Message: Jonny O,
I second your opinion. I have a 5.9 and drive 90+ miles a day five days a week in the wonderful DC traffic. I get 15-16 mostly with light traffic and as low as 12 with heavy traffic. I still love my V8 and I enjoy my drive every day I have for the last 2 years. If anyone wants to buy a V8 then do not complain about gas milage.

Message: the foot makes a big difference in mileage. Like the guy said above be gentle on the pedal. gently accelerate. It makes a big difference.
what I do is accelerate like I was in my old 3.9. If you use that much power from the v8 you will see a world of difference.
