Message: Message:
Hey, I recently purchased a 98 dakota RC, 3.9L 2WD(love it!!) I'm definatley looking forward to giving my ride more power. So far I've purchased a K&N Air Intake (Already feel a bit more power and gas mileage improved slightly). I also put a 180 T stat(much cooler). I've yet to purchase a flowmaster 40 series muffler and pipes, not sure what size to get: 2", 2-1/2" ???? And type of configuration.
I've been browsing around other threads, but wanted to get advice on my particular truck. I'm not looking to spend a whole lot of money right of the bat, I wanted to start simple and work my my up. Anybody have any feed back or advice(Sorry I'm just a rookie) Thanks all!!

Message: The conventional wisdom around here seems to be that if you're doing the exhaust you need a bigger throttle body to get the most out of it.

Message: No bigger than 2 1/2" in on the muffler and either single 2 1/2"
out or if you want dual tips 2 1/4" so you don't lose important
backpressure. Muffler brand is up to you, there are other
choices besides Flowmaster. As someone who has modded the
hell out of their truck, the F&B 48mm throttle body is highly
recommended. That was my single biggest performance gain
and you can feel it where you sit no bones about it.

Message: Nice! I most def going to look into the Throttle Body. I think I just changed my mind on my next mod. And maybe I'll go with the exhaust next. Thanx!!

Message: Build the intake side up first. When you do the exhaust, either stick with 2.5" for single or drop to 2" for true duals. Do yourself a favor and regardless which road you go down, cut the stock y-pipe off and go from there. The stock y-pipe is the 2 2" pipe off the manifolds crushed together and attached to a 2.5" pipe. It's super restrictive. So either get a 2" in/2.5" out y-pipe, or pay for a custom 2"in/out x pipe for duals. Do what you will with the cat. You'll be much happier.

Message: if you have the air intake yeah you can do a bigger exhuast. if not it'll jsut wipe out your bottom end. i have jba headers and y pipe into a 3" exhuast, no cat, 40 series flowmaster dumped before the axle. it worked well with my old engine which was heavily modded. got a older (replacement) for now and its straight stock. and i can feel the difference.
