Message: i just bought a 2001 dak r/t with 7k miles on it. It has full exhaust and accel 8.8 wires on it. I did the tps mod to .76 dcv and removed the rubber flap next to the radiator. Any suggestions on where to go next? I am planning a tonneau cover (mileage), aem brute force intake (then i will relocate the iat), autolite 3923's, and a hypertec 160 degree t-mostat this coming week. I'll probably do a superchips tuner unless a pcm is the better way to go (if so, where/what do i do to get the better pcm)? I want performance but, do not wish to jeopardize mileage that much. Can anyone tell me what color stock injectors are on these trucks? This one has red ones and I can see a part#, but no mopar symblol. I have noticed two problems, (i have an excellent aftermarket warranty), the tranny misses shifts sometimes (only under heavy acceleration) and a hear a horrible graunching noise in the left front end under a slow tight turn, any ideas?
thanks a bunch

Message: Balanmcing performance and efficiency can be difficult. I have a '01 5.9, non-R/T. I used the Hypertech prgrammer with excellent results. I have it at the 89 octane level. There's a remarkable improvement in performance, and a slight improvement in mileage.
I then tried it at the 91 octane level. Perofmance improvement was slight if any. Mileage went down about 2mpg. With the additional cost of premium fuel, it certainly wasn't worth the expense.
With a reprogrammer, you won't need to move the IAT sensor.
Not sure how much of a change a 160* thermostat would make. I left mine stock. Better check with the programmer before changing. A couple of years ago I tried a low temp thermostat with the stock computer. Performance was poor, and mileage was worse.

Message: Dude
Before spending a bunch of money on any mods you need to get the obvious problems out of the way.
It sounds as if you may have some ball joint problems and may have some problems with your tranny- most likely the valve body. I would take care of these things first.
As far as performance mods go with a fipk(cold air) and the 160 t-stat will work good with a Jet 2 or another programmer. Get some shorty headers and a good flowing single 3" exhaust including the y-pipe because the stock exhaust on these are completely pathetic. A Neon has a better flowing exhaust! Think about what you want out of your truck in the end and mod it accordingly.

Message: I'd get a TransGo shift kit, and the tuners/pcm should have about the same performance. A K&N FIPK would be a good mod also. I can't remember exactly why, but everyone says to stay away from 160 degree thermostats. Go for the 180.

Message: I just bought the warranty and the truck a few days ago so I will wait awhile before I fix the problems at my dealership (or um my friend does...). I am not worried about that. I already have full exhaust on it, jba headers with a gibson split rear duals and it sounds nice, I don't need to do anything there right now. I heard bad things about the hypertec programmer versus the superchips? anybody else? Is it better to have a jet stage II that I can not program rather than a superchips or hypertec that I can play around with? All the pics of the jet chip look like you plug it in and forger it, unless a programmer comes with it. The warranty stuff I can take care off and the truck only has 7k on it so I'm not too worried until it leaves me on the side of the road some day. Anyone try a transgo shift kit? thanks
