Subject: SSBC rear disc conversion IP: Logged
Message: I just had an SSBC rear disc conversion kit installed, and it definitely helps with braking. However, I have noticed a metallic rubbing sound coming from the right-rear assembly, and it seems to occur mostly at lower speeds. I am guessing it is a quirk in the rotor/pads, or else some of the components aren't aligned properly. Any experience with this kit, or any suggestions as to what the culprit is?

Message: I have the same SSB Kit make sure the pads are secured with the clips. Sounds like the pad is rubbing. Or if your kit didn't come with clips, there are adhesive pads that adhere the pad to the caliper to keep it from floating on the rotor.

Message: One other thing make sure the parking brake cable is set correctly and not to tight causing the pads to drag.

Message: Michael, thanks. I also noticed that often the parking brake light will not go off, even when the brake is disengaged. I bet the parking brake cable is the problem like you said.
02RT, I ordered mine from KRC Performance. It was a good deal, and I got black powder coating for free (another site wanted $100 more for powder coating). It took about 3-4 weeks for delivery.

Message: How long does is take to install that kit? Was it hard? I'm thinking I need to do something because my brakes suck as is and I just bought a new boat to tow. Hmmmm.
Asside from the rear upgrade kit is there anyone that makes a better caliper for the front of our trucks that fits on the standard caliper size? That big SSB upgrade kit for the front is way too expensive for $2000 plus I'd have to buy new wheels to fit those 14 inch rotors. I just need a better front caliper I think.
But back to the rear. Do you all really think it's worth it? Does it help you slow down faster? I'm always having to manually adjust my rear drums and that's annoying plus they suck...lol
thanks

Message: Hello all,
I'm in the middle of an install right now. However I've run into a problem with installing the parking brake L bracket. The instructions don't really say which way to install it. Anyone got a clue? Besides that the kit was pretty easy to install and the rest of the instructions were written well.

Message: The guys at the shop I went to took 4-5 hrs to install the kit. They hadn't done one like it before, but they were pretty confident about it. They had to pull the axles out a little (as I recall...), and I made sure to have them put synthetic fluid back in.
The braking is definitely better. The truck doesn't dive nearly as much when braking, and when you clamp down, the truck doesn't bite and then fade like it used to. It's a pretty good upgrade.
I paid approx. $699 for my kit (standard rotors, powdercoating).

Message: I was thinking aboutupgrading the braking system on my dak. I'd probably do this after ball joints. I wanted to do the fronts first. Maybe powerslots w/ hawk pads. Then maybe the rears.
Turkeyhead - How much did the installation cost you and who did you go to? Thanks.

Message: NJQCDak
The installation cost about $275 for the brake kit, and another $60 or so for synthetic fluid (they have to partially remove the axles). I took it to a local oil/brake/tune-up shop here in Lexington, KY. They didn't have much prior experience, but were the type who tinkered with their own vehicles and were pretty determined.
When I upgrade my front discs sometime down the road, I may go with the SSBC short stop kit, but if the Powerslot/Powerstop/Hawk pad combo works well for you guys, I might give that a shot.

True the 2003 parts may fit on other Durangos, however 2003 "donor" cars are probably few at this time and ordering parts to convert from Dodge would likely cost more than the SSBC kit!
I finished my install and gotta say that it was worth the $675 I paid to socaldakota.com.
everyone:
I will also be posting some photos from my install that I found would be helpfull to know if you're doing you own brake install. Michael's photos helped quite a bit too!

Message: How does the disc brake conversion affect the anti-lock brake in the rear? BTW I'm getting in on the group buy for Powerslots and Hawk HP pads. I think I have to save up more money to do the rear brake conversion.

Message: There is a mod that you do to your brake distribution block that adjusts the pressure required to operate the disc calipers. Disk brakes require higher PSI (~1200 PSI) than drums (~600 PSI). The anti-lock system modulates the pressure that is provided from the distribution block, so it really doesn't care...no problems with anit-lock at all. Since I did my mod I have yet to lock up my brakes. With the drums, I'd chirp them at least a couple times a week in this DC Metro traffic I drive in!!!

Message: That's great!! What was the mod to brake distribution block? I thought that disc brakes would require a greater amount of brake fluid. Would the small rear brake (drum) reservoir be enough for the new rear discs? Thanks.

Message: I'm running into a big problem with my rear brakes. The parking brake cable has been adjusted a couple of times to try to correct the problem, but no dice.
The problem is that only part of the pad is engaging the rotor (almost none to less than half of the pad contacting); it's not uniform wear on the rotors, either. Try to imagine the brake rotor; on the outside face, the top half of the pad/rotor area is being used, but the bottom half is not; on the inside face, the top half is not being used, but the bottom half is.
Several techs looked at it, and one suggested that the cause may be that the mounting brackets are too thin, causing flex. I'm going to call SSBC and see if they have heard of this before, but do any of you have any thoughts?
