Message: Any opinions from people who have done it before, if it is worth changing out everything, or just replacing the muffler with a 40 series. I am not looking for any major HP gains or anything, just want a nice sound. I have a 1997 5.2L V8 dakota sport. I was thinking of keeping the pipes and changing out the muffler. Any suggestions or opinions would be appreicated thanks.

Message: noisy, crappy restrictive mufflers, buy any brand but flowmaster
get accelerator mufflers instead 5% loss i believe compared to
flowmasters 40% loss as compared to a straight pipe

Message: I've got an 01 QC 4x4 4.7l and installed a 40 series and had a muffler shop make a 3" tailpipe..it sounds great...nice aggressive sound outside and nice sound inside but not too loud. Definitely noticed a big performance difference paired with my Z-tube intake

Message: I've used Flowmaster 50 and 70 Series for over 12 years on two Daks. The 50 was quieter than the 40, but the 70 is still my favorite; nice sound out the pipes, but no floorboard noise. I couldn't tell any performance difference between 50 and 70 Series. '01 4.7 5spd 3:92 / 2 1/2" duals after Flow 70

Message: Blow masters are junk. Get Dynomax. Flow masters have too much loss (proven on a flow bench) and they are too bassy sounding unless you like the rice effect.

Message: I have installed Gibson headers and dual sport mufflers on a 03 QC w/ 5.9L and the sound is awesome. The sound is great at any speed. You don't get that rice effect like "another mark" said. Some work had to be done to the passenger side header for a prefect fit but overall easy install. Day after install, spanked a BMW 325i.

Message: Let me tell you guys a little bit about a flow chart. First of all it has absolutely nothing to do with the performance of the truck when your exhaust comes out it pulse's on it's way out like a heart. When you have a muffler with a high flow like the one's used on rice machines all the time that you can see through they sound loud yes, however when put on a dyno they actually rob horsepower and low end torque. The 5.9 is three times better off with a cat back system than a dual system and if done right for example the shorter the exhaust the better. Dual exit out the passenger side sounds the best.

Message: Matt, you said you were looking for sound not performance from your muffler swap. Smart man. I love the way my 4.7 sounds with 40's. The only way you'll get a peformance gain from a muffler is if you have done enough mods to be close to maxing out the flow of your existing system anyway. Percent restriction compared to an open pipe assumes you are maxing out the flow of an open pipe! Not likely with our small blocks.

Message: You guys have it all wrong. Just take out the muffler and put a piece in its place, then take off your heat shield from you cat. Take a torch and cut a flap, bend it back, gut the cat, then bend back your flap and weld it up and reinstall the heat shield.

Message: I have a flowmaster 40 series Deltaflow muffler that I just swapped out with the stock muffler and put a stainless 3" tip on. Sounds great especially when you floor it. I had it installed about 3 weeks after I bought the truck (2003 4.7). But I think I want to go louder. I was thinking of going with a high flow cat with a 3" out to a flowmaster 40 series 3" in to a dual 2.5" out with two 3" tips on it.
I haven't heard of any one going with high flow cat's but I definatly think flowmaster is the way to go.
Anybody try high flow cat or just cut 3rd cat off?
By the way I definatly think the tip has alot to do with the sound, originally when I had my setup installed they put a 4" chrome tip on the end of the pipe instead of the 3" stainless that I asked for. The 4" was much louder but I didn't like the look, too big and I'm not too crazy about chrome.

Message: I gotta say the magnaflow sounds great on the 2.5 stock pipe setup. More of a tight sound than that loose diarrhea that some duals give ya. My neighbors have tundras with duals, they don't sound that great. One sounds down right fcked.
My Dakota sounds tight and fast.
