The 318 is a common and popular engine. The main question is how far apart do you want to tear apart the engine. you can go with a high flow cat and bigger exhaust coupled with a supercharger if you want bolt on performance. Or, you could go with some new racing piston head, valves, lifters, cam shafts, and valve covers if clearance is needed. You could go with a turbo charger but a supercharger is more long term bang for the buck versus nitrous which has to be refilled. If you want ungodly gas mileage you can look into adapting your truck to run off of a water cell, look up water engine in google. Below is an example link. Although a fringe of garage science this is what the future holds.
