Subject: Speed Sensor Location ?
IP: Logged

Message:

Can anyone tell me where the "Vehicle Speed Sensor" is located at on my truck ?

It is a 4.7L, 5-Spd Manual Trans, 4x4, 2001 Dakota Quad Cab.

I've been all through the FSM, and I can not locate any reference to where it is located on a MANUAL TRANS EQUIPPED 4x4 ....

Thanks All !

The rear one is located on the axle, the fronts are located on the inside of the steering knuckle.

Are you referring to the ABS speed sensors ?
I am specifically NOT.

I am looking for the "Vehicle Speed Sensor" which supplies the signal for the speedometer and odometer.

Are you implying that the PCM uses the ABS sensors as the (only) inputs which drive the speedo and odo ?

Rear wheel speed sensor is on the top of the differential, at least it was in 99. About $40 and you can change it yourself.

Sorry, I misread your question. Yes, I was referring to the wheel speed sensors. Mark told you the correct location for what you are looking for. By the way, if you act like such a dick when people are trying to help you, not many people are going to answer your questions.

Look, I don't come on here to get into pissing contests. I like to learn, and help others when I can. If you want specifics, OK here:

"I am specifically NOT" - Capitalizing all letters in a word is the internet version of yelling.

"Are you implying that the PCM uses the ABS sensors as the (only) inputs which drive the speedo and odo ?" - Either you don't know enough about what you're saying or you were calling me an idiot. If it's the first, I apologize for my response. If it was the latter, I still contend that you were acting like a dick.

These responses from your second post were even worse:
"Whooooaaaaaaa ?", "Thank You SOOO much for all your help !" , "...relax, have a beer ?"
If you would have just pointed out that I misread your post, no problem. I realize that I am not perfect. I should have read your statemtent more closely. You didn't have to be condesending about it. That's my only point. I am trying to keep an even temper, you are the one who seems less relaxed. Also, if you read it carefully, I didn't call you a dick, I said acting like a dick. There is a difference.

Nice .... very nice. I just love this board.

Followed by a severe amount of PISS flying everywhere.

Oh well. At least I won't get any on me through my monitor.

Thanks hmmm. JES, why do you even care? None of this was directed toward you in the first place. As far as piss throwing, I tried to state my point in a civilized manner without showing any animosity toward anyone. If you are trying to goad me into a flame war, you're barking up the wrong tree. I will, however, state my opinions. Ole wanted examples, so I provided a few. I really don't see what I said that could be construed as offensive.

Not offensive? OK ... and when did I say anything about offensive? More entertaining than offensive. Kinda reminds me of the folks that get in a screamin match about the last Hershey bar while waiting in line at Wal-Mart.

You're right .... nothing was directed towards me. I really should be out back digging holes for the fence, but it's too damn cold. Just poking about. Nothing more. Kinda like having a conversation at the bar, except there's no beer ... and no peanuts ... and really no atmosphere whatsoever. But, if it'll make ya happy, I'll just keep my comments to myself. Kinda like that large man at the bar that requested I shut up whenever he called the bartender a snooty bitch under his breath. I'll just go back to my peanuts.

:o)

Nothing I say on the web is ever intended to be rude, condescending, or otherwise offensive to any person of any race, color, creed, religion, or what-have-you.

Again, I'm sorry if my EMPHASIS and detailed questions could be construed as offensive.

...............................................

I'll ask it again, as I don't think my question was answered clearly (well, I couldn't see a clear answer through all the other stuff in these posts):

Where is the "vehicle speed sensor" located on a 2001 Dakota 4.7L, Manual Trans 4x4 ?
(for reference, see the section on speedometer in the factory service manual, a subsection of the instrument panel section)

I am specifically looking for the location of the sensor which the PCM uses to determine vehicle speed. After reviewing the section on the ABS system, I am led to believe that the ABS sensors do not perform this function ?

I'd just like to know where this sensor is located.

Again, Thank You All ...

I think the PCM uses the sensor on top of the rear diff. Have read that elsewhere on a couple of occasions. I've never investigated it personally, so I'd get a 'second opinion', in addition to mine.

Yep, you're right JES. It is in fact on top of the rear differential. My comment that ole was acting like a dick was not a personal attack, but rather my perception of the way he worded and punctuated his response. Hey, if he wants to keep responding like that, he'll just piss a bunch of people off. That's up to him. Like you said, this is like hanging out with your buddies at a bar. Haven't you ever told one of your friends to stop acting like a (fill in whatever you like here)? See what I'm saying? As I stated before, it is not my intention to cause a flame war. Just trying to let someone know that they need to use a little more tact in their responses.

I've posted to quite a few boards over quite a few years and NEVER (sorry timber, didn't mean to offend your sensabilities) gotten a reaction like I got from timber.

There is a reason why a lot of people don't like these types of message boards, and timber's (OVER)reaction is a perfect example of this.

I finally got a straight answer to my question (by e-mail), and I am grateful.

Next time I need information I will post using the same language I have always used (for several years, NEVER having been called a dick ! ).
I REALLY HOPE TO NOT OFFEND ANYONE's SENSABILITIES !
