Message: Everyone seems to want to make their truck LOUDER. I want to make mine quieter. I want a 'stealth mode' muffler that makes the truck as quiet as possible while not significantly hurting the performance. Does anyone make such a thing? I want people to think I have nothing under the hood and then blow them away (or at least surprise the heck out of them).
I knew this guy way back in high school that had such a muffler for his Camero. All you would hear is the air whooshing (for lack of a better term) out of his exhaust. It was impressive.
Ideas?

Message: Maybe I've never had a "loud" truck before, but my Dak sounds quite nice as it is. However, I am interested in making it a stealth truck. Just about everyone around here has made their car/truck/bike sound like it has 500 cu. in. under the hood (and that's a good trick with a scooter), so I wanted to see if I could "go my own way" and make mine silent (or as close as possible). Even the stock muffler makes a statement.

Message: If you could do it without loosing HP it wouldn't be such a bad idea. I've out grown the need for having the loudest truck/car in the neighborhood myself. I still like to hear the rumble. I think the Flomaster 50's offer a good comprimise for quiet idle and low speed cruising while still giving a nice bark when you ounch it.

Message: That's also part of the equation. I am no longer a 'kid', so why should I try to have my truck sound like a kid's truck. I'd like to be different and a 'silent killer' is an idea. However, I don't want to loose any significant HP to get it quiet. I still like the go-go-go of the 4.7 (even with the 3.55 I have). I'll check into the Flomaster 50. Thanks!

Message: Not trying to steer you in one direction or the other but a cool way of doing what your talking about is an exhaust valve. You see them on ebay every so often. I have a friend w/ a camaro that has flowmaster 50's but when he pulls the remote cable in the cab, it bypasses the muffler and basically makes the car a straight pipe. Its cool because his car sounds like a ricer at first, then right before he hits it, he pulls the valve, and it roars.
You could set it up with your stock muffler one way, and a flowmaster 40 on the other if you want to have the best of both worlds.
Anyway, just a thought, and I totally understand where your coming from with the stealth thing. Theres way too many people going around with loud exhausts.

Message: Okay, I forgot to add my question: is the Flomaster 40 the muffler for power or silence?
I like the idea of two mufflers (have to see if it is practical). That way I could go with one that does hurt performance somewhat and then once in a while switch over and blow away the pimple-faced kid with a ricer. As it says in the MasterCard ad, "Priceless".

Message: I thought you wanted to be quieter. The flowmasters would make you louder than stock. adding a "cherry bomb" type glasspack as a resonator would help with your original plan and not add any more restriction.

Message: How about replacing the stock Dak muffler with one from a 70's luxury car with a big block, like a Olds with a 455 or Lincoln with a 460. The mufflers on these cars are extremely quiet and should't develop much back pressure on on the 4.7 (287 ci).
Just a thought, as I have not tried it. But it seems that a muffler designed to flow a big block wouldn't be that restrictive on a smaller engine.

Message: Okay, let me explain to you my knowledge of mufflers:
....
Okay, now that I've told you all I know about mufflers...
My original idea was to make it quiet. Now Nick came up with an idea I had not even thought about (i.e., getting the best of both worlds).
Here is what I think I have learned:
1) The Flomasters are good for performance, but can be 'loud' (or 'nice, depending on your perspective).
2) The stock muffler is 'quiet' and if I add the glasspack to the stock, it will make things quieter and not restrict the flow much.
3) If I want the best of both worlds, I could put in an exhaust valve with the stock (or even quieter muffler) + glasspack on one side and a Flomaster 50 (or 40) on the other for when I want to blow away the ricer.
This is sounding like a MasterCard commercial:
1.Flomaster 40 muffler, $XXX
2.Glasspack, $XXX
3.Exhaust switch, $XXX
4. Installation fee, $XXX
5. Look on ricer face when he is blown away by a silent Dakota, priceless...
Oh yea, the LAST thing I want is for my truck to have that f*rt can sound for the exhaust. I assume the glasspack won't do that to me.

Message: I will also look into the idea floated by DSW (thanks!).
It's not like I'm going to street race this thing, I have too many other fun things to do (like camping with the family), but if the occasion arises....
I think I have enough ideas to start doing some sanity (and price) checks on them. It’s just that 1/2 the kids in the neighborhood where I live have these little f@rt can cars that really do sound stupid (why would anyone want their car to sound like it has a severe case of gas?). The other 1/2 have LOUD exhausts on cars/trucks that I swear I could beat in a race (even pulling the camping trailer). I want to set a different example.
Again, thanks to all of the good suggestions.

Message: To have a quiet but efficient muffler the best bet would be to get a long muffler with a 3" in and a 3" outlet. In mufflers the longer the quieter. The stock one on the gen II's are short and throaty. the ones used on the 5.9 Ram's are quiet and flow good.

Message: i switched from a flowmaster 40 to a magnaflow, straight thru muffler, the truck idles real nice, and cruising around its relatively quiet but when you romp it she lets ya know whts up. cruising side by side with another dakota here in town, he has a 50 flow , i can only hear his exhaust not mine, but when we step in it its about the same, only thing is his gets quieter as i pull away farther! heheh i can take an exhaust clip today and post the link later ill do one at idle and one with revs, and an in truck one. hopefully this will help find what your looking for.

Message: I personally love the sh!t out of the 40 series on my 4.7
But on another case the muffler sounded like sh!t on the FWD Chrsyler we had. I didn't even like the ricey sound of this engine from the stock muffler once I fooleshly cut off the resonators up front. The resonators were indeed HIDING the very Ricey sound the small V6 made.
Installing a GLASSPACK before the muffler was a very great improvement on that car and made it sound ok again.
My Flowmaster has a deep and failrly LOUD idle.
Glasspacks are not too loud at an idle, but bark like crazy with RPM's.
Installing the GLASSPACK in front of a MUFFLER may just give what you're after. A quiet truck at idle and low RPM's and no significant decrease in performance while getting louder with RPM's (once you were actually racing).
If you TRY this. Let us know. Just curious.
I LIKE mine the way it is. It get's the attention from the little engine Ricers because no matter how they try to add fart cans or fart cannons, their small Ricey engine will NEVER sound like a MAGNUM V8!

Message: That magnaflow sounds really nice. Thanks for the sounds.
I like how quickly you got to 90 mph. I don't think my stock quad 4.7 with the 3.55 will get there that fast. That 'torque management modification' sounds interesting also (dang, you're sending me in another direction). Is there a thread on it (or a good message board search term)?
Now I need to think & see what money I can scrounge. You know, there are other things than my Dak (shocking, I know, but...).
