This Tranny is controled by it`s own computer.
Right from the manual. this trany is a computer controled multi range which combines optimized gear ratios other features include driver adaptive shifting it has 3 sets of sun plantery gears also has a unique alternate second gear that fits between 1st and 3rd.the second is prime. this 2nd prime allows smoother4-2 kick downs at high speeds and second passing performance over a wider highway cruising range.
the Gear ratios are
1st 3.00:1
2nd 1.67:1
2nd Prime 1.50:1
3rd 1.00:1
4th 0.75:1
so the drive adaptive shifting lets the tranny controler pick the gearing just by the way you drive put your foot iin it it remembers and you have a diff. shift patter drive light footed and it uses the other higher patteren.

Message: I don't think that's quite right Buck. My 02 QC ALWAYS uses 'SECOND' when shifting from 1st, and USUALLY uses 'SECOND PRIME' when shifting from 4th or 3rd. It NEVER uses 'SECOND PRIME' when shifting from 1st. It SOMETIMES uses 'SECOND', if I'm hard in the throttle coming from 4th or 3rd. Maybe this is what you were trying to say, but it kinda sounded like you were saying the TCM picked 'SECOND' or 'SECOND PRIME' when shifting from 1st depending on the throttle position, which mine has NEVER done. Hope this helps.

Message: are you saying that your truck never shifts from 1st to 2nd or seconnd prime ,starting from a stop with your foot in it. the primary sits between 1st and third. the other second allows for smoother kick downs..

Message: I thought it used second on the upshift and second prime when kicked down, didn't realise it was supposed to be driver adaptive too. Seems like a pretty good tranny so far, between plowing and towing mine can get worked hard but fluid still looked clean when changed at 30,000.

Message: I would tend to believe the second PCM. Since I moded my motor for the extra torque down low, it won't downshift nearly as often as the original configuration was doing. The whole package pulls much stronger, but seems to wind up slower.

I noticed the Adaptive part when my wife dorve it to go to town. then the next day I drove it ." and I said what to **** wrong with this thing I got it back home and I turned it off and then restarted it in my black topp drive wayy I punched it and it came back to life.. I then like most men read the Manual. I think it can be set up with the standard DRO Scan tool. I think it is the best other than a 5 speed has all the old goody`s as the 727 torqueflight heaver clutches and "6 sets" 2 Oil Pumps even tho one is plenty. and if you break it ,,,it has limp mode.

again I am sorry for my gramer and spelling.

Message: If you're noticing differences in power (which it sounds like, since it "came back to life" when you punched it?) that'd be more the PCM changing than the TCM.
The gear ratios are not changed by the TCM.

Message: I think I heard that the bolt up is totally different on the 4.7. So no cigar there buddy.
Don't forget that the new 2003 like mine has no TCM. It's one and the same in the PCM.
So NO torque management mod for me.
Another thing. Mine will NEVER EVER jump gears. I mean if you are doing 30 or so and it was allready in 3rd, it will NOT jump to 1st when you floor it at that point. It will go to 2nd and maybe THEN go to 1st. Same thing from 4th down. If it was in 4th it wont jump to 2nd. It will go to 3rd, then think about it a sec and decide if it will give me 2nd!
All in all it works better for towing I think. Shifts absolutely great from a stop, etc.
BUT, if I run a friend from a 25 to 30 MPH roll, mine robs me of some time as it goes to 2nd and then decides if I can have 1st. By them my friend(s) will have a jump and it's up to old faithful to catch back up!

Message: Mine does the same thing...if I hit it at 30mph or so, in 3rd, it doesn't really HIT in second, but the kickdown time from 3rd to first is loooooooong....just gotta learn to manually shift that badboy down to 1st right before you punch it :D

Message: Graph,
My 2002 4.7L would do either or. I could make it jump gears from 3rd to first or OD to 2nd. If I was doing 55mph, I could rap the throttle real fast and then back out half way and it would stop at 2nd prime. It would stay there as long as I was accelerating at part throttle. Or, I could just nail it and it would skip 2nd prime and go 2nd. If I was going 30mph and nailed it, it would go all the way from OD to 1st without stopping at any other gear in between. I loved this transmission! I wish I could put it behind my 5.9L.

Message: 6lizrd - I heard the bolt pattern was the same, but I've never checked it. Even if it is though, the electronic controls would be totally different.
