Ok, got the M1 intake manifold installed this week... very happy, definitly more power in the upper RPM's, don't notice a loss down low like everyone says,

only downside, i payed 400 for all the parts from southeastrt.com.... thats good, but to get it installed were i bring my truck alllllll the time, and usally get hooked up,and does great work,

except this time 515 for installation???....60 bucks in other parts i didn;t have...other gaskets and such, oil change, and coolant flush....and 390 of that was labor....does that seem right...i don;t know how long it takes to install this you have a clue of what you are doing

just lookin for an opinion, lookin to get 1.7RR next,

A friend and I did mine. If you follow the directions that come with manifold, buy all the necessary parts for it, have the right tools (torque wrench, gasket remover, etc.), and maybe a new thermostat (180 degree for me); it can be a pretty task, though time consumming.

MAN... OUCH... What else did you need for your M1??? I include everything you need with my kits... Installation is 4-5 hours for the first timer as others have stated, but a dealership could easily do it in 90 minutes, but they most likely charged you book time of 5.5 hours or something...

Bummer

Yea i was guessing he did some standard hour charge...

new parts were:

new thermostat and gasket
1-1/2 gallons of antifreeze
bybass hose
throttle body gasket
hose clamps
injector oring set
solder, and shrink 20mm

for a grand total of $64 in parts

390 labor
20 for oil change

40 in tax

for a grand total of $515

i mean it seems like if he knew what he was doing it shouldn;t take that long...like you said the dealer could do it in 90 mins

most shops even dealerships charged based on the estimated time of the Mitchell book. If it takes the guy 45 minutes to do it but the book says 5.5 hours guess how much time you pay for. 5.5 hours and thats what he gets paid for.

Most Dealers will charge about $85 per hour.

And like someone posted above, they go by the "book" time.

The last time (and I do mean the LAST time)I had mine worked on at the Dealer I dropped it off at 10 AM and it was ready at Noon. They charged me for 4.5 hours labor.

That crap should be illegal!!!! Really

You got screwed!!!!!!!!! I did mine myself and i really am no great mechanic in like 3.5 hrs! The install book is great that comes with the intake! 12 bolts hold down intake and 4 bolts for the fuel rails! just take the whole front bracket off with the alternator and compressor still on it and lay it to the side on fender! Four bolts on throttle body and three linkage lined 2 vacum lines! Its really simple just use plenty of rtv on corners near the water jackets and don't overtorque it will leak!!!!!!!! Do all work yourself it's simple!!

SORRY but I'm going to go OFF here. Did you get ripped off. YES. But, that's the car business for ya.
It's a real joke how they can charge you for 5.5 hours and be done with the job in 2. That book needs a re-write. The even sadder part. I know of Benz dealer mechanics that make around $35k a year. They get some up-sel pay that they gamble off with dice, because it's so lame. I'm not going to do the math but I know that the $20 an hour he makes does not even come close to the $70-$85 an hour places charge. Especially, when he puts out 2 or more hours for every one he gets paid. Then there is the service rep (a friend of mine) who used to make about the same or sometimes $40k. Then the dealer decided to cut the pay by reducing their percentage from %18 to %9. So needless to say my friend quit. Ever hear about what a service rep has to go through on the average day. HA HA the guy that got his job put his 2 week motice in after 4 monts. I qoute "That's just not worth it".
Anyway, just another example how the higher ups in corporate america are sticking it to their employees (just evil really) and the customer (Welcome to America!).
Needless to say I work on my own vehicles. I got educated 10 years ago in auto technology just because of this whole situation.

Many of us do most or all of our own work, not just for the personal satisfaction, but because of the cost. However, some of the points you raise seem like they could use some clarification. You speak of a mechanic making $35k and $20/hour as if its outrageous. It really only takes about $15/hour with a small amount of overtime to make $35k/year and given what housing, vehicles, etc. costs today that's hardly an outrageous wage to try to make. There's really no reason that wage should even come close to what the place charges - overhead in running a business can be quite expensive - advertising, building cost, heat, property taxes, many types of insurance, extra social security tax for employees, etc, etc. For a capitalist society to function, yup, they get to make a profit too. So lets save a buck by doing our own work when we can; but realise others need to earn a living too.

In no way did I want to suggest that the employees make too much money. You know companies should make a profit. But, when times get hard the company shouldn't just raise their prices or cut the pay of employees just to maintain the executive lifestyle for the owners/management. If companies planned ahead for the hard times (which occur with some regularty in history) the economy would be much more stable.
Ready for the next hard time. Keep buying vehicles that get 10-20 MPG just to haul the boat up the pass a couple times a year faster than the "Japanese truck". Your pay cut will be here soon.

You're right there, Ram - it's the big wigs who really get to clean up. Amaziing how some of them could possibly justify making 50 -100 imes what the average worker makes. That's just disgusting.
Those Jap minis couldn't even haul my boat or camper, though. With a ten mile commute I'm fine with 15 mpg.
