Ya ... lol .. I'm just a lil fella. Big in spirit though.

Actually, WIP ... no I don't like this truck as much as I thought I would. And, yes, I do plan to trade it in. Not on a Toyota. Been there. Wasn't impressed (altough the gate never bent by closing it). No timeframe, but my next will be a Ford. They've had the best overall track record in my experience (customer service, reliability, performance, functionality, et cetera). For now, I take my DAK for what it is ...... a poorly built truck that I can tweak a bit to meet my needs, desires, and expectations while it's still under warranty. Once the warranty's gone, either I'll have tweaked this truck enough to live with it a while longer, or it'll be gone for a F-150. Ultimately, there is very little chance I'll ever buy a Dodge again. The value proposition just isn't there.

I don't keep much of anything past warranty myself. I may keep my R/T past warranty, especially after seeing the 2005 Dakota. I just bought an extended warranty. The new Fords are impressive. They have set the bar, but that just means Chevy and Dodge will have to step up. Remember 1994? Dodge set the bar then. We can let Ford bask in the glory for a couple of years.

But, as far as denting is concerned, sheet metal is sheet metal. No brand is better than the other. Dodge is typically the heavy weight of the big 3. That would suggest thicker/more metal than the others. Chevy is typically the lightest of the big 3. You figure it out.

I like Fords too. But, that last time I looked at a Ford F150 they did something stupid. They set the engine back so far it is kind of tucked into the fire wall of the cab. Kind of like the last 15 years of Chevy Camero's and Firebirds where it looks as if removing a valve cover would suck sh!t. I really really like the awesome access we have under our hoods on the 4.7
I can reach just about everything with ease. I may keep my 2003 for some years. Mod it to death. We got our other new family vehicle to trade in as warranty expires.

Ya ... i'm thinking I just got some bum steel in my gate. It shouldn't have dented with all the more I pushed on it. Oh well.

I hear ya about the engine compartment. That nod definitely goes to the DAK. My Ranger was the same way ... could get to anything no problem.

I also have to give some praise to the AWD on the DAK ... saved my ass last nite. Was on the on-ramp to the local four-lane, when I hit some black ice ... slowly edged into the throttle and the AWD pulled me right back straight. I couldn't imagine the mess I woulda had on my hands with my Ranger in that scenario (fiberglas bed / part-time 4x4).

Til later,

People don't talk much about the AWD, but its a great working unit. Its one of the best things on my truck. I've only used the 4wd a couple of times in real deep or real steep stuff. That AWD works for you all the time. YOu just about can't break traction with it. Spinning your tires is almost impossible, but you can still get to 60 under 8 seconds.

Amen Deer!!!! I was a little hesitant, but my cousin talked me into it. He has it on his Durango and loves it. It took a little gettin' used to, but now I love it. And, contrary to popular belief, it isn't detrimental to the gas mileage. Gotta figure, with no lock-in/lock-out hubs, you're turning all the inertia of those parts anyway ... might as well have the advantage of having them connected to the transfer case via an open differential. Great option in my book.

Talkin about quality issues, my wife has a toyota camry and she grazed the wood trim around the garage door with the front left corner of the bumper and the pos not only was scratched the hell up but also now has a huge crack in it.
One day i was comin how from work in my 99 dak and this guy tried to cut in front of me on the highway goin about 60 in his old datson pickup, we hit and his entire left rear fender caved in, all thats wrong with my dak is a small dent in the chrome trim of the bumper!

Awesome. And that old Datsun is STILL 20 times better than a Honda is anyday!

My truck isn't a AWD, but a few times when it has rained really bad and I needed to get into traffic quick to get across lanes or something I've flipped it into 4WD (4 HI) and when the light turns green I can launch without spinning any tires. You should see the FWD cars trying to launch. Forget about it!

Ahhh...it's so funny to see people get so wound up and passionate over brand-loyalty.

The Japanese make better vehicles than we do...plain and simple. We make 'fun' vehicles. Being a Japanese vehicle or an American vehicle means more than being from Japan or from America. There are two totally different mentalities behind the designs of Japanese and American vehicles. The Japs go for reliability 1st, and fit and finish 2nd. Of course, the styling comes in somewhere around 8th or 9th on the list. Americans are all about style, and it shows in the cars we produce. We care less about reliability until our vehicle takes a whopping sh!t on us and leaves us stranded somewhere.

I have owned several Japanese vehicles and I was always able to beat the hell out of them and they would never give up the fight. This Dakota is the most expensive and newest vehicle I've ever bought. I have had more problems with my Dakota in just one year than I had in 15 years of driving Japanese vehicles...but boy, my Dakota sure looks cool.

It's all about personal preference people. Don't rag on someone cause they like the reliability of a Japanese vehicle and don't rag on someone cause they like the style of American vehicles.

Now if we could just get a bunch of Japanese mechanical engineers together with a bunch of American engineers that specialize in interior and body styles...I'm pretty sure we would end up with a reliable AND good-looking vehicle.

Laterz,

Huh?

Frankly there is little diffrence now between Japanese, German and American vehicles. The company's are all cross owned or partners in some way and the quality is about the same overall. I have a 1982 Rx7 I bought new and will have forever and I typically keep anything for at least 100,000. Service and repair on Chevy trucks, Honda, Mazda and Toyota cars have been about the same on well maintained vehicles. My Porsche's were the worst for expense and failure rate. THe rest about the same. My Dakota is showing excellent quality and no failures for 34000.

The Japanese cars, especially HONDA are reliable as long as you don't hit anything larger than a small mail box. Otherwise it's into the scrap yard with all the other many many Honda's in there.

As much as this has been talked about the last week or two, I STILL have a hard time finding Honda's on the road that are over 10 to 15 years old! The ones I find are ghetto jobs made out of many Honda's from the scrap yards!

How many Ford Mustangs are still on the road from the 1960's???? I must see hundreds and hundreds of them just here in Phoenix. I wish I had one. But they cost more used than many NEW Honda Civic's.
And unlike Honda's, they can be FIXED after bumping into mail boxes or trash cans. Hell, even after accidents with other cars!

If there's a 1980 Honda out there. It's been hidden in the garage. Out of HARMS way. You know, REAL cars and trucks that would otherwise boot it's a$$ off the road and into a ditch!

I say about 1988 is about the oldest I can see, and maybe I see one every several months or so around here. And this isn't even a state that causes severe RUST like on the coast, etc!
