Subject: how good are your brakes IP: Logged
Message: I drive a 94 2x4 ext cab dakota and mine are fair.
I drive about 35k a year, and I need better braking. Because the truck is not stopping as good as my cop car, I end up leaving two car lenths at 50mph. I am tired of getting cut off by cars jumping into that space.
I have 255 65 15 tires, so I have enough meat. now I need more braking force.
what are you using????

Message: I've got the factory brakes still. They suck. I'm going to check out those powerslot rotors. I'm doing the Moog ball joint replacement in about 2 weeks and them I'm going for new tires & rims, and also new rotors and pads.

Message: the powerslots work well but they warp too quickly(compared to other brand rotors). i geuss its good enough for the money. spend a few extra now and itll be worth it when the other guy is buying another set of powerslots...brembo or ebc make good disc. hawks and ebc make good pads.

Message: Kowalski,
I would have to have a composition break down of those SS rotors before I bought them. The 2 main ingredients in Stainless Steel that separates it from regular steel are Chrome and Nickel. Both of these metals have strong self lubricating (less friction) characteristics. That's not something I want in a rotor. I prefer metal compositions that INCREASE the friction coefficient. It may not matter. You can probably the friction loss of the stainless steel by running different pads and applying your brakes harder, but that's defeating the purpose. Also, stainless is more prone to glazing. This sounds more like a marketing scam than a real performance upgrade. Kind of like the Tornado. Of course, if they never warp, that would be an improvement. Stainless is less prone to warpage. That one advantage may outweigh all the disadvantages.

Message: I have drums in the back of my quad cab. The braking actually feels kind of "mushy," or soft. Could it be the drums, or is that how Dodge makes it?

Message: I have the stock brakes on my 2001 dakota r/t. I am also replacing the ball joints on my truck and wanted to upgrade the bakes on mine. I looking for a kit that replaces the rear drums with disc and upgrade the front discs. Does anyone know any good parts to get that are good but not 5 grand good? Thanks for the help!

Message: Whiplash - go ahead and do your test if thats what you're into. You might want to learn more about warpage too - seems a lot of times it is blamed for uneven pad build up on the rotors, a common problem on our marginally braked Daks and often fixed by some easy braking after the rotors cool. Some have mentioned problems with the power slots but I haven't heard of any problems with ssbrake. People who have tried either all seem happy with the improvement. I don't think these brakes are analogous to the tornodo.

Message: Kowalski,
I actually have done the trick you mentioned with the braking. It does help reduce the feed back throught the wheel.
Is stainless steel brakes just a name or do they actually make their rotors out of stainless? Stainless would definately last longer than cast iron/steel. The addition of the slots should eliminate the tendency for stainless to glaze and help the stainless grip the pads better. It maybe a perfect combination.

Message: Thanks for the reply's
I drive my truck very hard and still not sure about the powerslot rotors. Ive seen many a post about warping.
I did not think I needed disc in the rear, just 11 inch drums from my cop rear.
So SS brakes and powerslots are all that is available??

Message: How about the drilled and slotted rotors from Auto Zone... I just got them this last week... I'm going with stock pads... I noticed even with the holes and slots, they are still very heavy compared to the stock ones... They were $90 apiece, but I think they were worth it... Their suppost to be anti warping which was the main reason I got them... I wasn't really worried about stopping because it stops really good as is... Of course I keep my rear drums fairly tight, by backing up and applying the brakes by tapping along on them "this tightens the drums only ofcourse"... I think the rotors I got were Aimco extremes or something like that...
