Dude,
I don't know what your goal is, but the 5.9L Cummins weighs like over twice what the 5.2L weighs. Even if you managed to shoe-horn that thing in there, the front end can't handle it. The ball joints would snap off. This is a bad idea.

yeah im not sure the 5.9 would fit, and it does weigh a a lot (i have heard close to 1000lbs).

but i do think a 3.9 4cyl cummins would be more then enough for the dakota, you can get some good power out of them, and pretty good gas mileage.

that would be a pretty nice package, wish Dodge would do it...

That would be a great engine for the Dakota. I'd be down to the dealership tomorrow if that was offered. But doing the swap yourself is not going to be easy. But it can certainly be done. But here's the problem - What about emissions? Check in to that before you spend a nickel or turn one bolt.

I dont know the whole story, but i read somewhere in California, a guy had converted a gas vehicle to diesel, and took it to the DMV, and all they wanted to see was the EPA plate on the diesel, they didnt care what year the diesel was. after that they changed the registration to diesel for the car in the DMV computers.

didnt sound to bad, dont know how it is for other states though.

here is a link to banks cummins dakota, not exactly your daily driver, but cool none the less

http://www.bankspower.com/sidewinder.cfm

heard they use it to tow the trailer to the flats, then change tires and gearing for the speed runs...

btw that Banks racing dakota gets 20MPG and can do 220+ miles per hour on the flats. someone else said they have a 2wd dakota with 12 valve 5.9 cummins and get 30+MPG, imagine what you would get with a 3.9 4cyl? 40mpg?

anyway here are some links to pics of a 4 cyl cummins in a dakota in this forum:

http://www.turbodieselregister.com/forums/archive/topic/22842.html

this is a great forum with info about cummins engines and installs:

just look around, some good info.

its a very possible swap. I would do it if i had a dakota. just get the powertrain outta a 3/4 ton dodge (2wd if u have it, 4wd to get the t case) and it will all bolt right up. a 3.9 cummins (4bt) is just a 5.9 without two cylinders. They're all over in forklifts, delivery trucks, farm machinery and industrial stuff. just remember that if it has to be rebuilt its gonna cost a lot. new diesels aint cheap at all.

cummins rates their new 3.9's at 125 hp and 355 tq. that'll spank a 4.7 (even the new HO in 2005) in towing any day.

I was considering swapping out my 4.7 for a 9.8. You think it will fit. :) I was hoping to produce around 960 HP and 1000 ft lbs of torque.

Cummins??? Maybe a show car or a dragster but not a daily driver.

A quality diesel is the only thing that will get me back to the dealership for a new Dakota - I like my 5.9 too much. Wouldn't even trade it for a Hemi.

The diesel in the Sprinter van looks promising, even though it's not a Cummins. Will have to wait and see how that works out.

Mid grade fuel here is $1.95. Diesel is $1.65. My Dakota gets about 13mpg around town. The Sprinter gets ??????

I have a friend who has a mobile hydraulic service business and
he drive a Sprinter van and he said it gets around 25 mpg with
all of his tools in it and on the highway doing 70.

In a Dakota it should get 30 or better.
