Subject: slow 5.2 need help IP: Logged
Message: 1999 Dodge Dakoda 4x4 5.2 Automatic
Between idle and 3000 rpms it's a pig.
It's been like this since new.
Dodge told me this is how it's suposed to perform.
Does anyone know if this is true?
Is there anything I can do to get better performance from idle to 3000 rpm?
Thanks

Message: What gear ratio and what size diameter tires do you have?
If your gear ratio is 3.55, going to 3.92 or 4.10 will pick up performance in that rpm range ... expensive to swap though, especially on a 4x4.
Put in a MP PCM (5007098) which will require 92 octane.

Message: John-R, the KRC site has a page devoted to modding the crank-position sensor bracket, which they claim is good for 2-4 degrees of initial timing advance.
I've tried it on my 2000 5.9 QC, which recieved the death flash on a routine trip to the dealer's service dept (NEVER AGAIN!!!). It restored most of its former low-end punch.
You could also spend the $300 or so for a Hypertech or Superchips programmer, or a little more for a MOPAR PCM (for your truck, it would be P5007098).

Message: I have a friend with a 4.7L 4x4 who had the 3.55 gears and tows. He went to 3.92s and said that it made quite a difference. The overdrive on the highway prevents a big mpg hit. I myself (2wd) went from 3.55 to 3.92s and bottom/mid range rpms performance is helped quite a bit and my mpg stayed almost identical.
