How do you pull the codes off, is it turn the key on and off 5 times?

Depends on the year. Pre-99 or so, you turn the ignition on-off-on-off-on, leaving it on, and count the flashes. Later cars may require pressing the odometer reset while ignition is on. Look here for details:
