 Subject: alternatgor wire upgrade

I am upgrading my alternator wiring i have done the grounds no problem. On the cord from the alt. to the battery can i cut the plastic cover on the post on the alt. to get the second wire on there our not? Also can i run straight from the alt to the battery + with an inline fuse. Any tips our pics would be great.
