I asked them what the difference was from the original shifter and got a stupid answer, they said - "a much better shifter mechanism". Ok, what is the real difference. You've put one in your truck. | intense99dak Gen III 1/25/2001 18:48:31 | RE: NV3500 shifter is here IP: Logged Message: First, let me reinerate that I have the shifter for the v6 and that I haven't seen the shifter for the v8's so all opinions are based on my shifter. Quite honestly, if all you're looking for is a shorter throw for less money, then cutting your stock shifter is the way to go. Keep in mind though that it is going to take more force to shift gears because of the new leverage factor. Also, the Hurst shifter throw is 4" from 1st to 2nd. How far down the stock lever would you have to go to get that throw? Now that I have driven my Dakota for a while with the new shifter, I would have to recommend it. It did take some getting used to primarily because A) the throw is only about 4" B) the shifter handle is considerably closer to the seat C) the shifter arm is a little further away from the driver than what the stock arm is. I also got rid of the round knob that came with the shifter and added a Hurst T handle. That alone made a big difference in the shifting feel. I have had ample opportunity to work the gears both on acceleration and deceleration and I like how the Hurst shifter performs. I am looking forward to adding Redline's MTL to see if the "notchiness" of the transmission is reduced (I am waiting for the snow to melt in my driveway). So, in closing, I would recommend the Hurst shifter. It is well constructed and does make shifting far better in my opinion. Plus it looks sharp ;-) Hope this helps. I don't drag race, it is just a pain for that 1st to 2nd shift. Since I have the 3.90, it comes at about 10-12 mph so I am shifting quickly at the start. I think if I made it an inch or two shorter, it might help with that. Besides, I had the darn gasket under the shifter housing repaired (it was leaking) the day before you put the announcement out. $144 bucks, mostly for labor. | rtqlet Dodge Dakota 11/28/2001 23:40:46 | RE: NV3500 shifter is here IP: Logged Message: The difference between stock shifter and Hurst shifter is noteable...installing the shifter is straight forward per the instruction sheet...the shifts are shorter thanks to the high ratio pivot...very nice solid feel, no slop...you won't be disappointed with Hurst's shifter...one note, the shifter is all steel, hence you will hear the gears turning, sounds like a muncie, real muscular, a small price to pay for a performance shifter that truly works. |

I learned the hard way that the current one doesn't fit my '01. I have a e-mail from Hurst saying that they were "working on" one for the '01 and up. Supposedly it will be available at the end of the year, whenever that is. |

I have taken measurements of the throw of the stock shifter and there was about 1" longer stroke in the stocker than the hurst. |

I have an '02 4.7L 5speed so I am guessing that the shifter will not fit. But $175 is a lot for a shifter. I had the shifter in my SHO cut down and re-welded and the throw was real short but it was a lot harder to get the stick into the lower gears. But that tranny is junk compared with a RWD car, due to the extended linkage. I have found with my Dakota, and the whole 80 miles I have driven in it, that the softer you shift the easier it is to get into gear. It does not like quick shifting. Thanks |

Some of you guys are missing the point with a different shifter. Sure, you can cut the lever down but that doesn't change the pivot ratio. Just like poster Grady mentioned with his SHO project, his shifter became more difficult to use. $175 might seem like a lot, but I think that you get what you pay for. Come on guys, don't go the cheap way out. What's next, cutting coil springs to make your Dakota lower? |
