Subject: which truck should i get IP: Logged
Message: I am thinking about buying an 86 chevy silverodo for a daily driver and for a fun off-road truck. But I am also considering getting and 80to90 Dakota with a 318 in it, which would be a better overall vehichle? Thanks...

Message: You would have to go to a 91+ Dakota to get a 318. The only 87-90 Dakota available with a V8 was the 89 Shelby which wouldn't be as fun off-road.

Message: I have a '92 Dakota 4x4 w/ a 318. Without any mods at all and 31x10.5x15 mud tires I beat 3 4x4 chevys with 38-44's and a gmc 4x4 van with 44's up comp hill in Pismo. What does that tell ya?

Message: hey marty, i have a 93 4x4 Dakota and want to step up from the P235's i got on now. when you say you have done no mods, do you mean bone stock? (i.e. no lifts, cranked torsion bars, factory wheels.)also, can stock a dakota really keep up with the "big boys" of road?

Message: Marty - what that tells ME is that those guys are NOT set up for Pismo! Big tires out there means jack squat. Seriously, that's not really a good measure. Go out to a mud hole and see who gets further, or try some steep razorbacks at Pismo and see whose nose gets buried in the sand at the bottom or who gets highcentered on top. My Jeep can whomp on my friend's Chevys all day long at Pismo, but go to the mud and it's a whole different ballgame. You build it for what you do with it.
Jim,
I think it's a matter of deciding what your priority is. I think I would personally go with the Chevy given the choices. LOTS of parts available to modify it, cheaper than the dodge parts, the solid front axle is stouter, plus highly upgradeable - hell, 1 ton axles would bolt right in if you got real serious. Get real serious in the Dak and you're talking serious modification to even be reliable.
However, if you are just going to do light off-road and mostly street, the Dak may be the way to go. Comfy IFS, smaller and easier to maneuver, etc.
Bottom line - for a 4x4 with some street, go with the Silverado. For a street truck with some 4x4, go with the Dak.
Hope this helps you out.
Let the flames begin. :)

Message: Tanks for all the info, except now I have looked through the four wheeling magazine and I have heard a lot of good things about the toyota tacoma, and the toyota sr5. It won the four wheel drive truck of the year. So now I am leaning to getting an older toyota sr5 with a v-6. Give me you opinion on what you think I should do, Tanks
