I have a 1987 4x4 Dakota Auto Tranny with the "New Process" model 207 transfer case. It "seems" to shift into 4wheel high just fine. When I try to shift from 4high to 4 low, it grinds the gears and makes an awfull sound like metal in a blender. I've read the insruction on the visor in the cab but I shift it to nuetral like it says to shift to 4low and I'm scared to jam into gear afraid it might screw something up. Is it the way I'm trying to shift the gear or defective parts. If so, what should I do. And just a few months ago I spent $1200 on rebuilt tran., and brand new front drive axles. With having this work done I think it should be able to shift into 4wd whenever I want it to. Please tell me what y'all think about it.

Are you moving when you shift from 4Hi to 4Lo? You can shift on the fly from 2WD to 4Hi but you have to come to a complete stop when shifting down to 4Lo or it will grind. The way you describe it, it sounds like your trying to shift into 4Lo while moving. 2WD and 4Hi both have a 1:1 gear ratio so when you shift, it only engaging the front end. When shifting to 4Lo, you’re going from a 1:1 to a 2.5:1 ratio. Since there are no syncros in the transfer case, it will grind while moving. I usually come to a complete stop, shift the transmission into Neutral, then shift the Transfer case into 4Lo and finally the transmission back into low gear. I never grind.

When I try to shift to 4lo, I don't move. I shift the tranny to nuetral and try to go to 4lo, but all it does is grind. Sorry if it sounded different but I'm not moving when I shift to 4lo. What else can I try to do?

Well, I guess you have to pay to register in this forum now so this will probably be my last post. I have owned two dodges now, 2k QC 5.9 Auto and an 88 ramcharger, both with shift on the fly t-Cases, np241 and np231. Shifting into low on both trucks required to shut off the engine in Nuetral, shift into low range and then start the engine and put back into gear. The problem went away on my Ramcharger after I had the transmission rebuilt. The 2k dak I think has a tranny problem because the trans won't unlock in 4th to accelerate but downshifts to 3rd. Tranny makes noises and vibrates like it is trying but lugs and downshifts to 3rd which is killing gas mileage. Also, when in nuetral, 2wd hi range on level ground, if you gas the engine it rolls forward. I have never had a 4wd vehicle do that before and i am just waiting for the tranny to grenade. Good thing I have the warranty

OK heres the best way to get in to 4lo. First of you have two choices Engine off or on. When the engine is on you will here some grinding but i assure you it is not bad as long as you follow this.

Engine On - Drive at a speed between 2-5 MPH Put tranny in to neutral and well rolling put the transfer case into neutral and then swiftly with force jam it in to 4lo then put back into drive. follow same instructions to get out.

Engine Off - if you do everything i said but well moving at between 2-5 mph and in neutral turn the motor off there will be no grinding.
