Does anyone know what's the limit size for gears
in the rear for a 97 V6 4x4? I know you need the
same gears for the front. I'm looking into the
4.10:1 because i want to put on 33" tires. But I
wanna know if 4.55:1 would be even better. Please
help if you can. Thanx!

Yours in Dakota Off-Roading,

Tony

Tony, I think that 4.10's are the lowest available right now. I have been shopping prices to change mine out to 3.92's. If I get Dodge to do it with factory stuff it will cast about $1500 for parts and labor. I plan on running 33's also. If I were you I would not go below a 4.10. Even with 33's you will be killing yourself on the highway gas wise. But you will definitely have some pulling power. I have 32's on my truck now with the stock 3.55's. 33's and 3.92's will be a perfect setup for daily driving and offroading for me. You may already know this but in case you don't you have to change the front gears also when you change the back. I say that because I have actually talked to some people who did not know that.

I have 4.10s with 33” tires on my ’88. If you plan on driving it on the highway, I turn 3000rpm in high gear at 65mph at 10mpg. I don’t know off the top of my head what gears are available to the reverse cut Dana 35 under your front end but I think going lower than a 4.10 will definitely make it brutal to drive on the highway.

The best place to find the answers as well as the gears is Randy’s Ring-Pinion. These guys know what’s available, reasonably priced and ship fast.

Randy's is one of the places I spoke with. There again, for the newer Daks, so far 4.10's are the lowest. I still like 3.92's for a good compromise. By the way Walt, haven't gotten a chance to tell you but your truck looks sweet. From the mods you've done I bet it is a bear off road...
