Message: Does anyone know where I can get a diesel conversion for a dakota. I've heard that the Cummins B4 is practically a drop in for a 3.9 Dakota with a stick.

BTW, I have driven a diesel turbine vehicle with 3940 ft/lbs of torque and 1500 hp!

Message: Oh man would your truck be the talk of the board. I haven't heard of anyone doin that. I'd be scared personally. The rams are a much beefier truck. The engine might fit fine, but the first time you go to pull a tree stump out (and you could do it, too) and your frame twisted, don't be surprised... :)
But you guys know dodge.. never know whats cummin up in the future.. ;)

Message: There is talk at DC that since they own Detroit Diesel that they are working on a V6 Detroit diesel for the 2003 or 2004 Dakota. DC currently has a 3 years left on their 5 year contract with Cummins. Expect DC to drop Cummins(51% owned by Ford) for either the Detroit or Mercedes Diesel for the RAM in the next few years.

Message: A couple of years ago at the Detroit Auto Show (NAIAS), there was a Durango on display at the Detroit Diesel booth with a 4.0 (?) turbo-diesel under the hood...so it seems as though it would definately be possible. Whether we'd see something in production soon I guess remains to be seen. It would be sooooo sweet though. All the torque you want while still pulling an easy 20mpg!
It's too bad GM f*cked up back in the 70's (?) when the miserably failed in trying to convert a gas engine over to a diesel. That gave diesels a bad rep here in North America for quite a long time!
Cheers

Message: I had a diesel isuzu for about 7 years and put on about160 K miles till it rusted out. The isuzu was a 2.2 litre and got about 40 mpg. I expect the dakota would get about 30 mpg m/l.
Last summer I phoned cummins and discussed this with their customer service. They recommended the B4. According to their customer service guy, someone in texas was installing the B4s. Supposedly, the Ram bell housing bolts right up and the V6 exhaust lines up. I'll be in texas beginning of July and could pick it up and drive back if the guy was still building them.
From my experience with the little diesel it appears that they overheat if you run them too fast - I'd probably want to install something like a 255 rear axle.

Message: hey you know you can buy a new dakota right now with a 2.5 I-4 turbo diesel from the dealers lot. but you would have to drive to brazil or argentina. i would need a little more power than it puts out though i'm not good with metric conversions but i think it get about 27-32 mpg and has about the same torque and the 3.9 v6.

Message: I have a 94 extcab 4x4 V6 w/ 210k miles on the clock. The engine is still running smooth and strong, and I plan to drive it as long as possible. When the time finally comes to replace the engine, a diesel replacement sounds great with rising fuel costs and the possility of converting the diesel to run on used vegetable oil. (see www.greasecar.com)
To GJoyce of Cummins: would the 5.9 24V fit into my engine bay, and how does the weight compare with a V6? I imagine suspension mod's would be needed. Also how is the availability of the B4? Do you know what vehicles have used it?
Thanks in advance,
Mark

Great truck. Not pratical. Runs 9's in the 1/4 though but the radiator, intercooler, fans, and batteries were in the bed. So much for using it to haul anything but ass! LMAO

It would be a good option on the 1/2 ton Ram pick up as well. Hey the new 150 might have a new 4.5 PW diesal soon next year or so.
