Subject: Dakota throttle bodies IP: Logged Message: Has anyone had any REAL experience with companies such as smokindakota.com, quickd.com, etc. and how they can mill out the throttle body? I'm not sure exactly what this is called, but its supposed to increase fuel flow from the throttle body into the intake (I think), thus increasing mpg and hp's. Is this a good idea? I have an '89 3.9L V6 4x4. |
Bernd GenIII 1/15/2001 00:16:39 | RE: Dakota throttle bodies IP: Logged Message: Tony (QuickD) and Steven (SmokinDakota) don't do the machine work themselves. Tony assembles them and Steven sells them. (Tony does know his stuff on the Magnum Engines though.) Jules (Magnum Performance) and Bruce (Flometrics) are the only ones who actually do the milling "InHouse". Holley also has a modified TB (52mm) but there's been some delay on the release due to the MAP problem on the stock engine with a big bores. What is mainly done it the step in the bores is removed and the bores are opened and radiused int eh process. The stock shafts are replaced with thinner, stainless, ones and the blades are also thinner models as well. All of this increases the airflow and, in some cases, increases fuel economy since you don't have to press the go-pedal as much with the better airflow. Normally, a CNC Mill does the bores...in the case of the Flometrics TB, it's done 100% on the CNC mill from Billet Aluminum. This process can be done by hand...but only by a seasoned and experienced person who does it on a daily basis (Magnum Performance). However, even the best hand work can't compete with the accuracy of a CNC mill. Bernd D. Ratsch 1997 Dodge Dakota SLT Supercharged w/Nitrous |

One item forgotten on that post as well...the tops of the TB's are also milled flat with only the airhat "nubs" left for centering purposes. In some cases, the are horns are either left intact (slightly enlarged and radiused) or milled down but I haven't seen that being done anymore. (It can be requested though) Hughes Engines, QuickD, Magnum Performance, Holley, and Flometrics are the players in this field. Bernd D. Ratsch 1997 Dodge Dakota SLT Supercharged w/Nitrous |

Bernd GenIII 1/18/2001 08:41:44 | RE: Dakota throttle bodies IP: Logged Message: If you're thinking about a S/C, stick with the Flometrics model (48mm V6 edition due out in a few more weeks). I've run a modified V6 TB on my truck with the S/C and the bores are just too small...even modified. You can get away with a stock V8 TB on the V6 though...and they bolt right up (check your linkage though). Bernd D. Ratsch 1997 Dodge Dakota SLT Supercharged w/Nitrous |
