Subject: 180 Degree Thermostat

Message:
Considering doing a swap from the 195 to the 180 on my 2001 Dak (well doing it this spring). My only concern is winter. I live in central Canada, and we regularly get periods (usually lasting a couple weeks at a time) were the daytime high in below -20C. Any comments?

Michael I ask on one of the old posts about changing the t-stat to a 180.As I told Bernd...my 2000 4.7L will not shift into OD un-till my t-stat is open all the way,and my heat gauge is all the way to the normal range. As cold that it is where you live,I wonder if it would shift to OD.If you look in your manual it will tell you when it is suppose to shift to OD.I am not going to change mine ever to a 180,but I do wander about the shifting thing if some one changs to a 180 t-stat. FOOD FOR THOUGHT!

The funtion of a Thermostat is to get the engine up to a certain temperature and then keep it there by opening and closing at the specified temperature. (Most T'Stats run at 5 degrees above they're advertised rating.)

However, if you live in a very cold area (like what Bob was describing)...the radiator may not get warm enough due to the windchill factor. (Moving air is colder than stationary.)

So...you can run the 180 in the cold weather but I would suggest that you either let the vehicle warm up slightly longer or get a radiator blanket to help keep it warm.

If your weather is in the extreme cold, stick with the factory t'stat.

Michael...You can try it but again, I personally wouldn't change it to the 180 if the weather is that cold.

Correct me if I am wrong, but "in the old days" (early 1990's) if the engine did not acheive a ~190 to 195 degree operating temp, it would never go into closed loop, and fuel mileage would drop 2 or 3 mpg minimum, sometimes more. I've been out of the dealership for 10 years, but this should be considered!

In my old BAR-90 days, if 170 degrees wasn't reached, you got stuck in Open-Loop. (Systems varied at that time on temps though.) Closed-Loop operation is determined by MAP, TPS, IAT, and Coolant Temp now. The OBD-II systems are a lot smarter than the "old days" (I still remember them...god what a pain) and you can run a 180 without any degradation in mileage.

Thanks Berndt.
Upon further pondering it seems that it did achieve closed loop at a lower temp, but fuel mileage was still affected until full operating temp was acheived even in closed loop. I'm really dusting out the cobwebs in the old grey matter here. Thanks for the update on the newer tech.
Mike

BTW, how did you make out with that regulator?

If you're referring to the MAP Adjuster, i'm just about finished with the final product. It now includes an adjustment for the IAT and MAP allowing you to control the fuel and timing slightly in the process.

Bernd,
I was reffering to the Neon regultor we discussed. Sorry for the confusion. Although the other update is good too! :)

Sorry I mispelled your name last time!

Oh...yeah...now I remember. I checked with one other person as well (Marty - KRC) and he's almost done with his return system.
