Subject: Howling noise - axle brng or pinion? IP: Logged Message: My 1992 Dakota (2WD V8, tow package) recently developed a howling sound that seems to come from the rear of the vehicle. It is most apparent when I am coasting with my foot lightly on the gas at highway speeds. It goes away if I apply power. It also seems to become louder on a gradual right hand turn. It does not matter whether or not it is in gear, which eliminates the trans in my opinion. Does it sound like a wheel bearing to you? I also considered the pinion bearing or possibly the intermediate driveshaft bearing. I do think I am due for a set of U-joints soon. Also, the clutch plates in the limited slip unit are grabbing and chattering. It did this once before, and I corrected it by changing the lube (with limited slip approved lube). That was about 25000 miles ago. The truck has about 135K on it now, and it sees some pretty heavy duty towing duty during the summer (25' boat, about 5700 lb). Any suggestions are appreciated! |

That's what was put in mine when the new gears and posi unit went in. I've talked to quite a few people locally and they swear by the stuff. Be sure to add the LSD additive. I am going to take it apart again this spring and double check the backlash. |

IP: Logged Message: 98 Dakota 4x4 5.2 w/ limited slip rear - had the howl at 38K miles, pinion bearings were bad, had them replaced at the dealer (they gave them to me under warranty) - problem was fixed - got the howling again now at 102K miles, having it checked this week. Pinion bearings have been a known issue with this truck |

I can hear it from underneath the vehicle and also in the front. It is an automatic, I'm not sure it would be the diff. The noise goes away when I put it in gear. Anyone out there knows anything, please let me know. Thanks. |

I have added differential additive but still experience the same noise sounds like a mown! That could be front wheel bearings. It's not unheard of for them to go. We've had a couple new Sunfires that had wheel bearings go out with less than 5000 kilometers. |
