Subject: Which is the better year?
IP: Logged

Message:
I have been reading many reviews on '97-on Dakotas, and as a prospective buyer, my funds limit me to either a 97 or a 98. So far I have seen more bad things than good on the 98s, and vice versa on the 97s, although I have read my share of bad stuff on the 97s as well. I hear talk mostly about, but not limited to, bad ball joints on the 98s, I know every truck is different, and sometimes there are lemons, but is there much different between the 97 and 98 model years? Which would you all say is the better year? Thanks.

From what i've seen...the early '97 models had less problems than the late '97 early '98 models. (Ball joints, steering/alignment, driveline)

Honestly, I have no idea. Most guys that I know with their early '97 models have had almost no problems. The ones with the late '97 and later models have had more problems. My "Ping Report" is just one case example of this.

Sooo...which would be the better choice? Late 98 or early 97? We (my family) hasnt had much luck with used cars, and I am not about to buy my way into more problems. What do you all think? Thanks for the advice.

Warden,

With any used vehicle, you may have problems that event he dealer didn't know about. (Previous owner may have abused the vehicle.) The only thing that I could recommend before actually purchasing the vehicle is to get the VIN# and run it through: http://www.carfax.com. This way, you will at least know some sort of history on the vehicle. Also, ask the dealer for the previous owners name and info...sometimes, if they're really helpful, they will give it to you.

That's my $0.02 worth on the used car subject. ;)

I understand that, but I mean with all the well known (or common) problems with the two years. (ball joints, driveline, etc..) which would be the better bet. Or does it not really matter so long as I keep from late 97, early 98. Thanks, and I really appreciate the advice.

I'd stick with the earlier years. Main reason being is that about a good majority of the people have turned their trucks into the dealer for service and (more than likely) most of the problems have been fixed.

On this subject, I can only speak for this particle truck but I have 250,000 ks on mine ( man/6-98) so far other than brakes, oil change's and regular maintenance, tires etc, this is still a super truck. I need to do the tranny over as she's startin to drop out of overdrive and slidin into third, i suspect a soft kit and seals will see another 250,000.00 and no she's not for sale I just love drivin her thats my .02s worth...Oh yah she's a 98 Sport 4X4 club and an easy ride...

I recently just bought a 97 an within the first two weeks had to replace the timing chain an gears. When i bought it i could hear it rattleing but i bought it anyway so i got the garage bill two days ago cuz the job looked to difficult to do myself anyway it was like $800.00 which i figure is worth it to make it last longer but i really didnt plan on droppin that much money on it within the first two weeks of owning it. Other then that i love it. I love the mid size of it. Not to big an not crammed.

I recently bought a 1997 V8 automatic with all the packages which I bought knowing it needed a lot of work. I had an issue with the check engine light, but that is resolved and it's all fixed up now and I am very happy with it. Runs clean and quiet, gets the top end of the mpg (sucky I know but the top end is better than any other end) I wouldn't hesitate recommending this year and modal to anyone.
