Is there any way to update the computer when changing tire size so the speedometer displays the correct speed? I know it's not a big deal, but would still like to know that when the speedo says 65 mph, that's the speed I'm doing.

You dealer can custom program the PCM to the gear and tire size you have...at a $65 minimum charge though...and only if it's required. 1998+ Dakota's don't use a speedo-gear anymore. It's electronically controlled.

Or...if it's '97 or older, you can match the speedo-gear with something close to it from the parts counter at your local dealer.

Thanks Bernd, I had a feeling that the dealer could do that. I just talked with one and he said they couldn't. I have a 98 so I need the PCM reprogramed. You mentioned that this can be done only if it's required, please explain.

It sounds like they don't want to do it for some reason (they can do this). However, the computer does compensate for changes since it uses the driveshaft rotation and wheel rotation in a mathematical formula for speed.

Example: On a co-workers '98 Automatic (Dakota 5.2L Sport) we had changed the actual differential gears to 4.10:1 (from 3.55:1) and the speedometer was still accurate.

If you have a speedo-shop somewhere in your area, see if you can have them check your speedo for accuracy.

What tire size did you have originally and what did you change them to?

Once again, Thanks. It's not much of a tire change but I went from P23575R15 to 31X10.50R15. The actual tire diameters are 28.9 inches and 30.2 inches respectively. It works out to a 4.5% difference. It sounds like I may not need to worry about it.

If you have a buddy to follow alongside you on a highway, see how close your speedo is to his/hers. It's probably going to be very close if not still accurate.

Bernd,
I took my Dak into the shop today for some work and asked the service manager (the same one I talked to yesterday and told me it could not be done) and asked him to recalibrate the PCM for the new tires. He didn't blink at the request and said no problem. Thanks for the help.

I own a 98 Dakota, the speedometer has stopped working, I have tried a new speed sensor, and a new head unit, neither have seemed to work, any ideas?

Bernd, I went to my dealer and asked them to change mine. The only way they can adjust it is if the tire size you switched to is the same as one offered from the factory. If's it's not a factory setting, the dealer can't change it. At least that's what I was told.

Yes that is correct, factory tire sizes only. Every thing in between the lagest and the smallest factory tire size can be adjusted for.

Dave, I made the exact same tire size switch on my 97 dak and the service advisor and mechanic said no speedometer change was needed.
