Subject: Speedometer IP: Logged Message: Is there any way to update the computer when changing tire size so the speedometer displays the correct speed? I know it's not a big deal, but would still like to know that when the speedo says 65 mph, that's the speed I'm doing. |
Bernd GenIII 1/04/2001 12:08:15 | RE: Speedometer IP: Logged Message: You dealer can custom program the PCM to the gear and tire size you have...at a $65 minimum charge though...and only if it's required. 1998+ Dakota's don't use a speedo-gear anymore. It's electronically controlled. Or...if it's '97 or older, you can match the speedo-gear with something close to it from the parts counter at your local dealer. Bernd D. Dave Unregistered 1/04/2001 12:14:38 | RE: Speedometer IP: Logged Message: Thanks Bernd, I had a feeling that the dealer could do that. I just talked with one and he said they couldn't. I have a 98 so I need the PCM reprogramed. You mentioned that this can be done only if it's required, please explain. |
Bernd GenIII 1/04/2001 12:21:48 | RE: Speedometer IP: Logged Message: It sounds like they don't want to do it for some reason (they can do this). However, the computer does compensate for changes since it uses the driveshaft rotation and wheel rotation in a mathematical formula for speed. Example: On a co-workers '98 Automatic (Dakota 5.2L Sport) we had changed the actual differential gears to 4.10:1 (from 3.55:1) and the speedometer was still accurate. If you have a speedo-shop somewhere in your area, see if you can have them check your speedo for accuracy. What tire size did you have originally and what did you change them to? Bernd D. Dave Unregistered 1/04/2001 12:26:14 | RE: Speedometer IP: Logged Message: Once again, Thanks. It's not much of a tire change but I went from P23575R15 to 31X10.50R15. The actual tire diameters are 28.9 inches and 30.2 inches respectively. It works out to a 4.5% difference. It sounds like I may not need to worry about it. |

Dave Dakota Enthusiast 1/05/2001 09:06:54 | RE: Speedometer IP: Logged Message: Bernd, I took my Dak into the shop today for some work and asked the service manager (the same one I talked to yesterday and told me it could not be done) and asked him to recalibrate the PCM for the new tires. He didn't blink at the request and said no problem. Thanks for the help. Dave Fisher 1998 Dodge Dakota Club Cab Sport 4X4 3.9L V6 |

HSKR Dodge Dakota 11/15/2001 21:09:12 | RE: Speedometer IP: Logged Message: Bernd, I went to my dealer and asked them to change mine. The only way they can adjust it is if the tire size you switched to is the same as one offered from the factory. If's it's not a factory setting, the dealer can't change it. At least that's what I was told. |
CW GenIII 11/15/2001 21:26:45 | RE: Speedometer IP: Logged Message: Yes that is correct, factory tire sizes only. Every thing in between the lagest and the smallest factory tire size can be adjusted for. 2001 4.7 5sp RC 3.91 sport plus |
