Subject: 3.9 gas mileage IP: Logged Message: I bought a '96 Dakota with 52,000 miles on it in August. To make a long story short, it needed the new timing chain guide installed, and somehow the dealer ruined the engine. I think they ran it without any oil in the engine. They found a '95 3.9 with 32,000 miles on it and installed it. I have two questions, the orginal motor had no lifter noise. The replacement motor has lifter noise. Is any lifter noise in the 3.9 normal? Also, the orginal motor got 22.5 mpg on the highway. The replacement motor only gets 14.5 to 15.5 mpg on the highway. They used the orginal intake, distributor, and fuel injection system on the replacement motor. Does the 3.9 have a knock sensor on it, and could it be "hearing" the lifter noise and retarding the timing and causing the poor fuel mileage? The lifters are not real noisy, I hear them around 2,000 rpm the most. Other than that the engine runs fine. One more thing, the dealer updated the PCM with the latest software. Thanks for any information anyone can provide. |

I have even "babied" it and seen as high as 23 or 24. Put in the 3923's and did not really see any difference except that it did seem to run smoother. The gas mileage from this truck has really surprised me. I road-race motorcycles and do not drive that slow, so a light foot is not the reason??? |
EatRice Dodge Dakota 9/06/2001 11:49:50 | RE: 3.9 gas mileage IP: Logged Message: The Gas milage sucks comming from the 3.9. I had one and my 5.2 gets the same or better milage. As for the enging noise, almost all 3.9's make alot of noise, and most have a characteristic rough idle. The noise you could be hearing may be the timing chain slapping. There is a tensioner that can be installed to cure this problem. |

All stock 2x4 reg cab auto, 3.9, 3.55 The K&N drop-in helped out a lot. 400 miles from a tank of 87 exxon gas for over all driving. Beat that with your 5.2 as for the engine noise no problems with that either with 63,000 miles on it. Dont talk crap about the V6 Dags |

Gas mileage always was terrible. Back to the dealer several times and they couldn't even be bothered to really check it out. Just hook up the computer and say all codes show normal! I get another problem. 1-2 times a year, usually when temp starts to turn cooler, engine won't stay running and constantly stalls. Goes away after a few miles and may not return for several months, or may happen a few days in a row before it's gone. Any ideas about what may cause this. The engine seems more peppy when this happens, then back to it's old sluggish laboring normal self. |
