 Subject: 3.9 ping!IP: Logged Message: The boners that "flashed" my computer in my 99 dakota forgot to change the spark plugs back to the original kind like i asked them to....they put colder plugs in it to reduce pinging untill the flash came out awhile back.....anyways, it seemed more powerless lately (as if it could get more powerless) and would idle kind of rough. So i decided to change the plugs (why am i changing plugs on a 99 vehicle already?)and discovered that the colder ones were still in there. So the right ones (hotter) are in there now and it seems a little more responsive and definatly idles smoother now. Still no ping either. Just thought i'd let people know if they're having the same problems. I can't believe the difference in insulator length on the hotter vs. colder plugs!! |

The factor on this is the extended "Special Power Tip" that they use. Granted, the factory (normal heat range) plugs are also a Extented tip, but have shown problems as well. The longer tip (or extended tip) plugs actually can cause pinging. If you want to try it, run the Autolite #3923 plugs. They've been 100% succesfull in many Dakota's (Magnum and Pre-Mag). (They're also a standard tip plug.) As for the plug change interval, if anyone thinks that these engines are a 100,000 mile "Maintenance Free" engine...just yank your plugs at 10-15K miles and check out the electrodes...worn, pitted, and not very efficient anymore. (MSD users should change the plugs at no more than 7500 miles.) What's the difference in performance from the factory vs. the Autolite plugs...about 4-6HP more from the Autolites.
