Subject: 91 Dak 4x4 IP: Logged Message: Hello, I am considering getting a 1991 Dakota LS 4x4 Regular Cab, Automatic Tranny with a 5.2 V8, 75,000 miles. It has all the options available power everything. And almost no rust the dealer is asking around 5 grand which is in my budget. I was wondering what kind of mileage people usually get with this kind of pickup. Also i have been told to be very careful of the transmissions that seem to got to hell. I am currently considering giving up my Ford Ranger which i have had for three years and have never had to do anything but change oil and i have well over 130k on it. please reply thanks |

Tranny problems seem to be the major thing on this particular truck and our so hard to work on there have been cases at dealerships in my area where technicians threaten to quit before working on them. The other problem I have come across is abs related but on a 91 you dont have to worry about that |

I bought it a year ago with 68,000 mile on it. It now has 86,000 on it. So far the water pump, fuel pump, fan clutch, speedo cable, cv joints, and now the front diff. spider gears have been replaced. Still waitin on the damn gears too... Also seems to have a hard time keeping the temp. down in warmer climates. But the truck does haul ASS. No prob.s with the motor, tranny, or T-case in general. Just he stuff around it. Keeping my fingers crossed that nothin else goes. I hate to sell it but it may come down to it if I can't get anything fixed. I would like to know if you know of any other place to get spider gears or other drive line components. Even upgrading them. Also have there been any recalls for the paint. Mine is pealing on the hood and roof. Just wondering. I would also like any info. on a lifted truck of that year. Even anything on one with a staight axle conversion. Thanks |

Make a deal with the dealer that if you pay for the inspection and it passes, that the cost is deducted from the price. If not, you go into the deal knowing what is wrong and can bargain with that info. The dealer should not have anything to hide. I had the trans case rip in two while I was cruising on the freeway. It took three tries before we got a replacement from Dodge that didn't squeel or vibrate after the first 1/4 mile. Luckily, I had a very patient mechanic. All that aside I would still recommend the truck, it can really move and the suspension is dead on for aggressive driving. My Dakota has been lifted 4" with a Pro-Comp kit and is now wearing 31"X13.5" Mickey-Thompson Baja's and it will still bark those big meats loose in 1st, 2nd, and 3rd!!! (It's a stick not an auto) I need a source for Cut-out fender flares or any 4"+ fender flare that doesn't look like crap. SO HARD to find aftermarket for pre-97 Dak's!! |

The 2WD has always been in the family and had no major repairs, just the usual belt driven devices like alternator, water pump, etc., plus speedo, some smog sensors, etc in 10 years. I just replaced the front seal, and the timing chain as a preventative. Not quite as good a repair record as a Lexus, but not bad for an American made truck. The 4WD has also been very good, but did have a tranny repair at 75,000 miles. Also new ball joints, tie rod ends, etc. at 80,000 but it has seen a lot of serious off-road use. Since the 4WD is colored blue the paint is peeling. The 2WD is white so has no paint problems. Gas mileage on both those engines is very acceptable, and their price is certainly right. I like them both, but probably like the 2WD a little better. |

No tranny problems, even though he towed some with it. It's now got 178k and finally going to pieces, but only little things. So, from my experience I would recommend it (I've had two newer ones myself and love 'em!) |

I've owned it close to a year now and I've had to replace the pick-up coil and fix my heater (broken wire). Not bad if you ask me. I've put 16000 kliks on it. One thing to consider though if buying a 91 is that it is not a Magnum engine, if that matters to you. I find my 318 has lots of power. Oh forgot, I also had to replace a faulty temp sensor. All these repairs put together cost less than $100.00 so not a bad record, knock on wood. Steph. |
